black lines on monitor

When i use graphs in MS Excel, many Java apps, and a few other programs, short black horizontal lines show up all over my screen. The only way i can get the to go away is to actually close the program, or to move the focus to a different program (but then they remain in on the windows taskbar).

The lines are always in the same places. Basically there are 14 columns of these lines, in groups of two columns. The first group of 2 columns is about an inch and a half from the left side of the screen and tehn they continue with a spacing of about an inch between each pair of columns after that. The lines themselves are about a quarter inch long.

The only thing i can think is that there is some kind of problem with the interface between the apps that I'm running and the video driver or the monitor driver. My video card is the Intel Radeon mobility X300. I'm not sure which monitor i have, it shows up as a default monitor in my hardware profile. i've tried updating the viedo card driver to no avail, but haven't done the monitor driver just cause i don't know which driver to download.

any ideas?

You don't need to install a monitor driver unless you're using an external monitor... XP can natively support your laptop display with no drivers needed.

What drivers are you using? If you're using Dell drivers, you may want to consider third-party drivers, such as omega drivers.

Another thing you might want to consider is running diagnostics on your video card. If it were my laptop, I'd also test with an external monitor to see if the lines were duplicated there, to pinpoint whether the issue is the video card, or the display.

I have had the same problem....my inspiron 5150 with ATI Mobility Radeon will randomly go into white or black lines on the entire screen or just black lines / blocks on the icons.  I noticed it does it sometimes even before windows loads...which tells me it might be a bios thing.

I am using A38 (The newest bios)

Lastly a Dell Tech told me it might be a screen issue (He was in my office fixing the other 3 dells we had just bought)

But good luck getting tech support to help you...so far 8 hours on the phone..can't even get one keyboard key replaced.

I bought Dell inspiron 6000 last year. I am facing the same problem as mentioned by you, but this happens intermittently, generally when a DVD is being played.

Please advise if you have found the solution.

Thanks

I'm not entirely sure of what fixed the problem, but i'm pretty sure it was the omega drivers.

go to omegadrivers.net, and click on the link for ATI Radeon up at the top. This will bring you to a new page specifically for the ATI drivers. Up at the top again, just below where you just clicked, there will be a link for "win 2k/xp". that will bring you to a list of mirror download sites.

If that doesn't work, let me know.
