Battery Light (amber) flickering continuously

Hello everyone,

I have a Studio 1458. My battery got drained of charge while using the laptop. It has happened in the past too which is quite normal. But this time, the battery isn't responding. When I plug-in the charger, the amber light starts to flicker continuously. On start-up it says 'Warning! Battery critically low. F1 to continue.'

On doing so, system starts up normally but the light continues to flicker. I've removed the battery and now using directly on the AC Charger and it is working fine. I am clueless about the problem. Is it with the battery..the battery charger combination or something with the motherboard?

Hi Ayushmishra,

I would recommend you to update the BIOS of the computer.

Note: Before updating BIOS please ensure that:
*Battery is 10%> or >10% charged
*Battery charger should be connected
*No external devices (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) should be connected.
*All other programs should be closed and documents saved

  • Click on the link http://dell.to/VnRBkn
  • Click on ‘Download File’
  • Check on the radio box ‘Single-file download’
  • Click ‘Continue’
  • Click ‘Save’
  • Choose the location as desktop, save the file on the desktop
  • Right click and choose ‘Run as Administrator’
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to install the program
  • Restart the computer

Alternatively. check the battery health:

  • Right click on the battery icon on the taskbar
  • Choose ‘Dell Health Meter’
  • Click on ‘Battery Health’ tab
  • Examine the information shown in the window. If the battery needs to be replaced, a red icon will be shown along with a message confirming that the battery is no longer able to hold a sufficient charge

If you are not able to see ‘Dell Health Meter’, then install Dell Quickset on your computer. Here are the steps:

  • Click on the link http://dell.to/TLmWjB
  • Click on ‘Download File’
  • Check on the radio box ‘Single-file download’
  • Click on ‘Continue’
  • Click on ‘Save’
  • Choose the location as desktop, save the file on the desktop
  • Double click on the file; choose ‘Continue’
  • Click 'OK' on ‘Select the folder’ where you want to unzip the files (make a note of the folder location)
  • Click ‘Yes’
  • Click ‘Ok’, follow the on screen instructions and install the file
  • Restart the computer

In case you do not get prompts on the screen for instructions, then

  • Browse to the folder where the files were unzipped and locate the setup file
  • Double click on the file; follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation

Hi Ayushmishra,

Thank you for your response. It seems to be an issue with the battery or the motherboard. I would recommend you to replace the battery and check it works. If replacing the battery does not resolve the issue, then the motherboard may have to be replaced.

Hello Appu S,

Thanks for your response. I tried connecting my battery and checked in the battery meter. It is not showing anything. Not a red icon, not even as it used to show earlier.

Now, I'll go ahead with the BIOS update thing. Before I can go further, there is a query; The point you mentioned about the battery charge status before the BIOS update thing, what should I do about that. When I connected the battery and hovered over the cursor, it says 'Plugged In but not Charging'.

I am awaiting your response on my last post. Since my battery isn't working, should I carry on the BIOS update on the direct charging way?

Hi Ayushmishra,

Thank you for your response. I appreciate the information provided. Please share the status once you have updated the BIOS. I would recommend you to check if the charging port on the laptop is loose. Connect an alternate AC adapter to see if that works fine with the system. Do you see a light on the AC Adapter? If yes, please follow the below steps:

Please check the status of the AC Adapter in BIOS:

  • Restart the system and keep tapping 'F2' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
  • Under 'Main', check the status of AC Adapter (unknown/not detected/ 65W/90W)

I still haven't started the update process.

Currently, the AC Adapter status is 90W

Should I proceed with the BIOS update without the battery attached or should I attach it no matter its condition?

Thank you for your response. Battery is required to update the BIOS. I would recommend you to connect the battery and check the battery health and then proceed with the BIOS update.

I tried to run BIOS update after connecting the battery and the charger, but I cannot proceed.

Battery health is showing to be at 0% without any red icon or notice regarding Change Required.

Further when I am trying to run the BIOS update here is what coming up:

"The battery must be charged above 10% before the system BIOS can be flashed.

Press OK when the battery is charged or CANCEL to quit."

I tried pressing OK but it doesn't proceeds as the battery isn't charging and the amber light is continuously flashing.

Please recommend what to do. Urgent reply would be appreciated.

I tried booting up with another Studio 14's battery and it Worked! :)

So it seems my original battery is dead now and I need to order a new one!
