Win 10 v1903 update fails on Intel RST

Dell Inspiron 15-5578; Windows 10 Home Edition , v1803

My Windows update to version 1903 fails as it says that the Intel RST driver (iastora.sys) is too old, and version 15.5.* or later is needed.

If I run the Dell Update utility it finds no new updates, and the Dell system info reports the Intel RST as version 17.0.2.1076 (ie should be ok for the win update)

If I run the Intel RST app and get the System Report it shows the version as 17.0.2.1076

If I find the iastora.sys file in c:\windows\system32\drivers and show Properties>Details it says the version is 15.2.0.1020 (ie too old for the win update)

Where do I go from here ?

Thanks !

@veronica_inspiron_15_5578

I wish I had an answer for you and others.

More and more are posting with the same or similar problems???

Maybe someone else or a "Moderator" can give us an update to the problem???

Regards,

Welcome to the Dell Community @veronica_inspiron_15_5578

Windows 10 May 2019 Update (build 1903) fails to install due to an out-of-date Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver:

https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln318140/windows-10-may-2019-update-build-1903-fails-...

If the W10 update fails after updating the (Intel® RST) driver or if there is no updated driver for your model then you can work through the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the C:\windows\system32\drivers folder in Windows Explorer.
  2. Locate the IASTORA.sys file.
  3. Right-click on the file and select Rename to change the filename to IASTORA.old
  4. Run the Windows May 10 2019 Update again.

If needed the latest (Intel® RST) driver can be found here:

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) User Interface and Driver:

..thanks, but why is the Intel RST driver version shown as 17.0.2.1076  in the Dell Update and Intel RST apps, but only as 15.2.0.1020 in the iastora.sys file  ?

My iastorA.sys file shows the 1903 version of 15.9.0.1015. so it is probably just included with the build.  You might open the Device Manager and see what device is using it.

If you look at msinfo32.exe, it shows the Intel Chipset SATA/PCIe RST Premium Controller but it is not being used on any of my devices.  The SATA controller on my system uses the iastorAC.sys driver.

If you have a device which is not essential to the operation of your system, running that driver you might disable or disconnect it.

...I just received a really unhelpful email from Dell in response to my post :

Thanks for posting.  Apologies that your system is not performing as expected.  Unfortunately, based on the service tag number, the warranty has expired.

Well, thanks for your help Dell - you can't be bothered to keep your software up-to-date or investigate the issue that has already affected others...

I just discovered I had an older ASUS motherboard not running the Intel SATA drivers.  When I tried to install I got a not compatible with this platform message.

The SATA controller is now running on the storahci.sys driver.  I suppose the option of using that driver might help get past the current situation since it is the Win 10 driver.

Did you see my prior post asking what device was using the iastora.sys driver?

Hi – thanks saltgrass for the msinfo32.exe suggestion – I’m not sure exactly what to check but I get the following info :

If I expand to :

>Components >Storage >Disks   I have an Intel SSD SATA 256GB   (and also an sdxc card)

>Components >Storage >SCSI   I have MS Storage Spaces Controller  using driver spacereport.sys

>Components >Storage >IDE   I have   Intel 6th gen….SATA AHCI Controller   using driver  iastorac.sys

If I expand  :

>Software Environment>System Drivers

- iastora  is listed as Manual (start mode) and Stopped (State)

- iastorac (which is assoc with my hard drive according to the info above)  is listed as  Boot (start mode)  and Running (State)

So do you think this means that I don’t use the iastora.sys  driver ?

Or is there something else I should be checking ?

Can I just rename the iastora.sys file and reboot and see what happens or might this cause problems ?!

Thanks for your help.

Veronica

What I am trying to get a handle on is does this message give accurate info.  Is it really the iastora.sys driver causing the problem and if so, is it running a device on your system.

You seem to say the SATA controller is using the iastorac.sys driver which is what my normal systems use.  The one system is all I have running the Windows version of that driver.

Currently I am testing to see if I can remove the iastorac.sys driver and replace it with the storahci.sys driver.  But not looking good so far.  I will let you know what happens.

I got my system back so everything is fine.  I did not first use the special procedure for changing controllers or drivers on a drive.

Someone on another forum suggested going into Windows\System32\drivers and changing iastora.sys to iastora.old.  If I were going to do that, I would use the special procedure just in case.

First, set msconfig.exe to boot the system into Safe Mode on the Boot tab.  Then make the changes you want to make, and if the system requires a reboot, it will go through Safe Mode and change the driver.  You then use msconfig.exe to set the system back to a normal boot and it should come back in normal mode.

Nothing on any of my systems uses iastora.sys and msinfo32.exe shows it as Stopped.  And usually it shows a later date that the iastorac or iastoravc drivers, so I don't believe it would bother my systems.  But, as always, warnings have to be done regarding situations which may lead to loss of boot of that system, so be very careful.

Tried your method and it appears to have worked. Been fussing with this **bleep** issue for a couple of days. Many thanks. G.L.P.
