What is going on here?
I haven't bought a Dell in 15 years. My last Dell needed the motherboard replaced and was eventually found to be one of a group of laptops that had factory defects in the heating system which were causing regular failure of the motherboard and eventually required the entire computer to be replaced. Although Dell replaced the computer for free on that occasion, I was left with an impression of the computers as being very unreliable so I didn't buy another Dell until this year, when a series of review sites sold me on the Inspiron.
I've now had my Inspiron for slightly less than a year and the charger port has broken twice for no clear reason. More bizarrely, this seems to be a known common issue with the Inspiron and it's now looking like I'm going to have to get this issue, which I'm now being told is not covered by the expanded warranty I bought, every five months or so.
My communications with Dell on this issue have been absolutely bizarre.
The first time the charger port broke after 4 or 5 months of use, I assumed it was the *power cord* that had broken, since that's something I've had happen before with several computers, and I've never had the charger port break. I was told by support however that it was likely the charger port because that is a thing that happens, and they sent a technician out to repair it for free. Thought that was the end of it.
Then another 4 or 5 months after the repair, it broke *again* I began contacting Dell to try to get it fixed again, only to be told that I would have to pay for the repair this time. I explained that this was totally untenable because I can't keep paying Dell $160+ to repair an issue that shouldn't be happening in the first place every 4-5 months.
The last support person I spoke to basically told me there was no supervisor I could speak to, while repeating what the last several technicians have told me - that the charger port breaking is not covered under my expanded warranty, yet it is a known issue with Inspirons which several of the employees I have spoken to have experienced themselves. His advice was "don't unplug and replug the computer so much," and I'm over here like, "Wait so normal use of the charging cord which is required to run the machine is considered 'wear and tear' which is known and expected to cause damage to the point that the machine won't work anymore without repairs?"
What they are essentially telling me at this point is that they have not sold me a functional computer. They have sold me a computer that has a known issue which is not covered by their warranty and which costs $160+ to repair through Dell. And this seems to be a known issue that's going to continue occurring every 4 or 5 months.
At this point I am not inclined to buy from Dell ever again and I am inclined to warn friends and family against them. I've had two Dell computers in 15-20 years, and both have had bizarre issues which have risen to the level of rendering the hardware nonfunctional. I don't understand how the company is still in business if this is how it's been operating for the last 15 years.
Can anyone help me understand how "unplugging and replugging the power cord" for a machine that requires a power cord to run can be considered "wear and tear" that is not covered by the warranty? Does anyone have a solution other than "buy a new computer and never get a Dell again" or "pay to have the port repaired every 4-5 months?"

Years back I lost a Toshiba to this same issue. Once I fixed it by soldering. The second time I gave up.
The laptop should not be moved, transported or stored (much) with the charger cable in-place. It just invites accidents.

@AL_in_GA Yeah that's the thing, as far as I know I haven't transported it with the cable in or anything. If by "stored" you mean "left it with the cable in overnight" then sure, but I haven't done anything I can think of that would jar the port.
I've been trying to figure out if my laptop bag might have smacked into something at some point when I needed to transport it, but if that were the case shouldn't the first repair have fixed it permanently?
