USB type-C port not working

Today SupportAssist updated my system and after the reboot my USB Type-C port didn't work anymore.

It was connected to an external monitor, but I tried to connect also with a USB memory stick and nothing happens. Instead the normal USB port is still working.

These are the updates that have been done:

- Dell Inspiron 7391/7591/7791 System BIOS - 1.14.0 - 14,15 MB - Critico - Installato

- Intel Management Engine Components Installer - A04 - 318,11 MB - Critico - Installato

- Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update - A00 - 26,24 MB - Consigliato - Installato

- Dell Mobile Connect Driver - A00 - 10,59 MB - Consigliato - Installato

I suspected the problem was the BIOS so I downgraded to a previous version (1.13.1) but nothing changed.

Do you have any suggestion?

I managed to solve this issue and I hope my solution will help other users.

I had to go to "Device Manager" panel and then manually uninstall the driver of "Thunderbolt controller" under "System Devices". I reboot my pc and from the Dell website I download the updated driver for the Thunderbolt and installed that.

Finally the USB-c port started to work again!

The problem might be related to static energy. You can fix that by performing a hard reset.

  1. Shut down the computer completely. Do not suspend or hibernate.
  2. Remove all external peripherals connected to the system. If no external peripherals are connected, proceed to step 3.
  3. After unplugging, press the Power button for 30 seconds to drain any residual power from the motherboard. Press the Power button to turn on the system and allow it to boot fully.
  4. Test USB-C port.

Whatever device you connect, nothing happens. Even the led of a memory stick doesn't turn on.

My USB-C port is used only for headphones and to plug in an external SSD. Now, when I plug in either, I get an audio signal that it's connected, then a few seconds later another audio indicating it's NOT connected. I get no sound from the headphones, but the LED on the SSD stays on. I don't see any deice with "thunderbolt." Any other ideas? Thanks!

I work as an IT professional for company that has 100's of 9520 laptops. They have been in use for at least 1 year now. Lately we have been seeing intermittent USB-C problems. Not enough power to the laptop, loses connection to Docks (loss of network connectivity, monitors go black, etc). They were still under warranty so we sent them in to Dell after trying everything we could think of to fix them. Dell replaced the motherboards in every case and the laptops work fine now. So that makes me think that there is a faulty component on the motherboard that wears out after X amount of time.
