Power Adapter Error

G7 7588 not inspiron

Every time i turn on my laptop I get a warning:

! you have attached a power adapter to a port that does not accept power.

I have an external monitor (LGUM69G) connected to my laptop via USB-C to USB-C

I remember changing some setting before (not sure if it was in the BIOS or Device Manager) that wouldnt give me this error everytime i boot up. I had to get my laptop serviced recently and everything pretty much got reset. Now I cant remember what I did before.

I can still use the external monitor its just annoying that I get this error everytime i start up my laptop.

Hi GMMister,

Thanks for posting.  Apologies that your system is not performing as expected.

Have you run a systems diagnostics?  Please unplug all external devices except for the ac adapter, run Dell SupportAssist, make a note of any error messages encountered and post back.

Have you replaced the ac adapter or is it the original one that came with the computer?

Here is information from the Dell Knowledge Base you may find helpful:

How to Troubleshoot AC Adapter Error Messages?

If the system is under warranty, please contact me privately. Be sure to include your personal information (name, address, telephone, email) and your computer's service tag number in your message. Thanks.

If there is no warranty, then you could contact our Out of Warranty team to get a quote for a paid service call -

Id try to look up on the internet what you did before, or just not start up with the monitor.

I have the same setup.  Dell G5 5590 with the P2419C monitor.  Getting the same error!

Can I ignore it or should I be concerned?

I am also getting the same error with my Dell G5 5590. The support team is horrible. I purchased my laptop few days back and connected it to two monitors via a docking station. I get this error that the port is not designed to accept the power while the product page says that usb-c port can transfer data (audio, video, network and power source) and also confirmed by the hardware tech support. They are making this a software issue to charge money for a new laptop which does not meet the specifications as mentioned on the product page. Dell is acting like a car dealership.

Hi sigma_dev,

Thanks for posting.

What monitors are you connecting?  What docking station are you using? Does the dock have it's own power supply?  What cables are you using?  What

Can you connect the monitor to the laptop directly without any issues?

What wattage ac power adapter do you have?

Same issue for me.  'Warning your port does not accept power. To supply power to your system while docked attach a power adapter to your system'

I have the same issue with my brand new G3 15 3590.  The issue happens when you plug in the Dell docking station into the turbo USB.  This happens even though I also have the laptop plugged into to the supplied AC power adapter.

No need to ask questions about what cables, etc. This is a start up check that is failing to recognize the laptop is actually powered correctly.  It is annoying, so please offer up a fix.  You can duplicate the issue easily.

I have the same issue with my brand new G3 15 3590.  The issue happens when you plug in the Dell docking station into the docking station (VT2000 USB C Display Docking Station)

This happens even though I also have the laptop plugged into to the supplied AC power adapter.

No need to ask questions about what cables, docking station or monitors etc. This is a start up check that is failing to recognize the laptop is actually powered correctly.  It is annoying, and hard to believe theta we are the only 10 people on earth experiencing this issue.  Dell can duplicate the issue easily but prefers to gauge you with software support fees.

Hi -

I have the same issue, same annoying boot sequence error message (that I connected a charging adapter to a non-charging port).

I have a brand new G7 7790 and a brand new dell docking station WD19TB.

The error appears even with no devices connected to the dock. Just the powered dock connected via the usb-c cable to the tb3 port of my laptop.

This is extremely annoying on each boot. There should be a setting somewhere to ignore this message. Or at least please power the laptop via the docking station tb3 connection. I know there isn't sufficient power delivered, but since you already have that hybrid power scheme, I guess it can work. Plus, I don't run my laptop on full power all the time. 85% of the time, the 100 (or 130 dell custom) w of power would be enough to run the laptop without touching the battery.

Regards,

Radu

Greetings,

I have the same issues with a brand new G7 7590 Laptop with the WD19TB Dock. I updated all drivers for the laptop and dock with no success. Flashed the BIOS and updated the dock firmware, nothing helped.

Thru trial and error I located a BIOS setting to essentially ignore the warning and proceed to boot without user intervention.

  1. When the warning pops up choose the BIOS Option.
  2. Expand the POST Behavior Section.
  3. Look for the Warnings and Errors Setting and select it.
  4. On the right side of the screen select Continue on Warnings and Errors option.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Exit and Restart.

BIOS Post Behavior - Warnings and ErrorsBIOS Post Behavior - Warnings and Errors

If you need to return to the BIOS, reboot and spam (press repeatedly) the F12 Key once the Dell Logo Appears.

I know this isn't a fix, but at least it's a work around until Dell Decides to fix this.

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

@Rich-n-TN, thanks for hint. I have Dell G3 3590 with docking WD19, same message, although the original laptop adapter is plugged on, non sense. with your proposed setup the message pass, but still boot delay, Dell needs to solve this quickly out of respect for customers.

Regards

One more guy in our "army".

Connecting DELL G3 3590 to DELL WD19 (130 Watt consuming, 90 Watt transmitting over USB Type-C DP)

Both firmwares (Laptop BIOS and Dock internal chip) have been updated to the last versions.

Everytime I switch on my laptop, I got this message. First I thought my laptop does not support power-over-usb but BIOS shows this message even I had connect AC charger.

Please fix at least annoying message. Hope than my laptop will "learn" to accept power from its dock, it would be great.
