Inspiron G5 15 5500, randomly blue scree, locking then hibernates
My Dell G5 15 5500 has had this issue for a long while. It has gotten worse now. Any time I intensively use the laptop to play games like Apex Legends, or Boneworks, the computer will stop everything it is doing, go to a blue screen that says "Locking" and then hibernates. It then becomes unresponsive and I have to hold the power button EVERYTIME this happens. I have tried everything on power options in control panel to disable this, and it has not worked. I thought it was an overheating issue, so I replaced the thermal paste, bought a cooling pad, and remove the dust almost every week. This has not fixed it. I am lost on how to fix this.

I suggest not to replace the laptop. I fixed the issue by making a page file through Advanced System Options in control panel, clicking performance, and creating a page file. You can also try buying more memory for your laptop. Or as another solution try replacing/taking out the battery. The first suggestion worked for me. I believe the issue to be related to memory. I theorize when it runs out of system storage reserved for memory to write information, it does the weird locking thing.

Hi @GreenBlade22 Please open the on-board Reliability Monitor to see timeline of events. There should be a date/time event that coincides with this problem. Open the events, they probably report the same issue. Look for Microsoft error code and the other information that reveals the root cause. Please share an image, so that forum users can also see what you can see. Thank you.

It only shows "Windows was not properly shutdown". I click on it, and there is no error code. It is probably because it goes into hibernation, and becomes unresponsive, so I just hold the power button to force a restart, which is why it probably says "Windows was not properly shutdown".

I found a solution! Go to msconfig, go to services, select "Hide all microsoft services" and then press disable all. This has worked for me, and I am able to run my games without my computer locking. If certain applications do not work, you can enable that specific service that the app requires. I think the issue is due to memory usage, and how disabling the unnecessary services frees memory up.

Hi @sunny mannem it is Dell policy to provide new replacement laptop if same fault is not fixed on third attempt. Please raise Service Request to ask if new replacement laptop will now be provided.

Check my post history. "Locking" means its time to replace your battery. I actually removed mine altogether and haven't had this problem since May. I have to replace though because now I have another issue when, sign-in attempt gets disabled for 2 hours whenever I unplug my laptop or power outage, I guess due to no battery. Great laptop dell.

there could be a couple of root problems, so I will list all of them that I remember
-most likely its memory constraints, adding a large page file/upgrading memory is one solution
-you can also go to msconfig, and look at services that arent microsoft, disable the useless ones
-overheating is possible, so replace the thermal paste/fans or get a cooling pad
-there is alot of power related settings which i have no idea why dell specific computers hide, but you can use powershell/command prompt to force windows to bring them back, and one of them is called "Link State Power Management." Reactivating it will show it in the advanced power options in control panel, once you do that disable the maximum power savings for both of them.
-you can try disabling windows hibernation since i think thats what it does when it randomly "shuts off" and becomes unresponsive till you hold the power button to turn it off.
