Inspiron 5570 Keyboard Replacement FYI

Inspiron 5570

Inspiron 5570

FYI, I just performed a keyboard/palmrest replacement on a Inspiron 5570, and I should warn you, this is NOT a DIY task, unless you are an accomplished computer tech. All hardware is mounted to the back of the palmrest, including the keyboard, which is heat-staked to the palmrest at multiple places. To replace the keyboard (or the entire assembly) ALL components must be removed from the back of the palmrest. I chose to replace the entire palmrest assembly w/keyboard on this particular instance.

This is not impossible, but tedious and with screws of different lengths and diameters, that must be kept organized during disassembly. I have been repairing computers since 1983 and this was likely the most challenging project I've ever performed. It was successful, however, and the client was satisfied. I'm not sure what the engineer of this model was thinking, but it wasn't easy replacement of the keyboard or touchpad, the two most likely things to become inoperative. This computer was only 2 years old.

PS: There are excellent YouTube videos availalbe showing the steps involved.

And if you think that was bad, take a moment and read the service instructions for replacing the CMOS battery on a Latitude E5430. The easiest way...cut a hole through the cover located under the side panel so you can access the battery.

Yikes, JOcean! If it was my personal computer I "might" do the replacement, but not on a client's box; I don't think they would understand. That's unbelievable.
