Inspiron 17 7000 won't start up

Pressing the power button causes the keyboard to light up for about 20 seconds, then go dark. It also causes the charging led (right next to the charger plug) to light up for several seconds and then go dark. I hear a faint sound on startup, but the fan does not come on.

I've performed the following steps:

1. Verified the charger or wall socket is not at fault. (I've tried with two of both and see the same results, and the light on the charger itself is green.)

2. Removed the battery and held down the power button for 30 seconds (twice), as suggested here (and elsewhere): https://www.dell.com/community/Laptops-General-Read-Only/My-Inspiron-15-won-t-turn-on/td-p/4217688

3. Checked for loose connections, swollen battery, stuck fan, or other obvious issues. Found nothing.

4. Disconnected the battery, hard drive, and RAM. Under these conditions, the charger light blinks three white, two yellow, and the keyboard lights up briefly, after which the Caps Lock button remains lit. The fan does not come on and there's no sign of life on the screen.

Any other suggestions before I ship it off to customer service?

If your Dell PC does not power on or boot into the operating system, it is recommended that you perform a hard reset first. Performing a hard reset usually fixes many problems and also drains any residual power that may be causing the problem. If your Dell PC still does not power on or boot into the operating system, follow the appropriate actions below based on your Dell PC's symptoms.

Perform a hard reset
1. Power off your Dell PC
2. Disconnect the AC adapter or power cord, and remove the battery (for Dell laptop PCs).

Note: For certain Dell ultrathin laptop PCs that may have nonremovable batteries, we recommend you visit our Dell knowledge base article How to reset Real Time Clock (RTC) to recover your Dell XPS, Dell Latitude, or Dell Precision laptop PC.
Note: For certain Dell Latitude laptop PCs, we recommend you try and recover the PC using the forced ePSA method. Visit the Dell knowledge base article How to Use Forced ePSA to Recover from POST or Boot Failure.

3. Disconnect all external devices or peripherals like USB drives, printer cables, and media cards (SD/xD).
4. Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain residual power.
5. Connect the AC adapter or power cord and the battery (for Dell laptop PCs).

If your Dell PC still does not power on or boot into the operating system, follow the appropriate guide below based on your Dell PC's symptoms. You can also follow the instructions below to run a hardware diagnostic check on your Dell PC.

Run hardware diagnostics
When your Dell PC does not seem to be working correctly, diagnostics are available to help you identify and resolve the issue. Dell has built a suite of self-diagnostic tests into Dell laptops, desktops, servers, and Windows-based tablets. These are called the Dell Enhanced Pre-Boot System Assessment (ePSA) or Dell Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA) Diagnostics.
When your Dell PC encounters a problem, it is recommended that you first try to run a diagnostic test. Any error codes that these tests provide can go a long way toward troubleshooting your issue.

Thanks Adrian -- I've done the hard reset already, as noted, and the laptop does not boot up far enough to enter any PSA or ePSA diagnostics mode (as specified here).

Has there been any solution to this. I'm having same problems and no one is offering any advice past the few above steps.

Can't run diagnostics cause my laptop only has LED in the power button which is lighting up for 5 seconds but the laptop does not attempt to boot up at all and no resets are working

I'm assuming you have tried all the troubleshooting steps as mentioned in first post?

I'm also assume you're not able to get into the BIOS (F2 key) or Dell Preboot Menu - F12 key) ?

The best thing for you to do right now is put your warranty to work by contacting Dell Technical Support for assistance in link below:

By the way, what exactly is the exact Dell model number for the computer. The information will be helpful for forum members to see and offer assistance.

Example: Dell Inspiron 17 7778 ( 7000 series).

If you don't know, enter the service tag number onto the link below. After you should be able to see it in your Dell Product Support page.

similar issueon myInspiron 7568 2-in-1.

first i opened the back cover and remove ram and battery and held down power button for 30 seconds and pressed the other buttons on the side multiple times. this did not seem to make a difference.

then i removed every connector on the motherboard. then i connected only the connector that the power button uses and held down power button for 30 seconds and pressed the other buttons on the side multiple times. system started to flash white and orange LEDs. assuming this was the warning of no video I connected the video cable for the laptop display. Then the system POSTED and i saw the Dell logo. POST warned me the HD was not connected. I then one by one connected the other connectors back onto the motherboard starting with the keyboard and then the trackpad. Once they were connected I could hit F2 to get into the BIOS and navigate. I see no errors anywhere to explain what had happened. Each connector i did connect to the motherboard I hit the power button and watch POST again to make sure a specific connection did not change behavior. finally connected the HD connector and the system booted up

hope this helps

Sorry interface on this is weird hadn't seen these messages. The barcode sticker on the underside of the laptop fell off ages ago, with the heat of laptop and being put in and out of laptop bag over time it didn't stay and i didn't realise it was so important or i would have made a note of it. I've tried the hard resets of disconnecting battery and the cr battery on advice of my cousin who is experienced with computers. No luck the computer doesn't begin a boot, the power buttons led lights up for 5 seconds and that's it

This is the most annoying thing about this laptop. It happens to me all the time and it is so discouraging to know that I spent so much money on this machine.

i agree very tough issue. It has happened again to me and the only way I can figure to get it going again is the same steps as i previously posted. i can't make it happen at will though, which makes it even harder to debug. how are you able to gets past the issue and back up and running?

for a time i suspected it has somethin to do with using the sleep option rather than shutdown or restart, but now I am not sure. Do you use sleep?

update on 12/17/2021:

I did go thru the process that I posted on 12/28/2020 3 times before the issues stopped happening. In between I also updated the BIOS on the machine to the latest version. So I imagine that is an integral step once you get it going update the BIOS to the latest version Dell has on it's drivers page for this system. I also never use the sleep option anymore. In windows->control panel->power options I changed pressing the power button to be shutdown rather than by default it was sleep.

i definitely think it has to do with sleep, and a need for a BIOS update. See my other update from today (12/17/2021)

Our experience with Dell Inspiron 7786 Laptop

Client brought machine in as it would turn on briefly (fan spin, keyboard light up for 1 second then shut down) and the laptop was reporting a non-OEM AC Adapter 3 weeks prior, each time the computer started up. We disconnected the ac adapter, internal lithium ion battery and cmos battery and held the power button down for 30 seconds. Leaving the cmos battery and lithium ion battery disconnected and connecting the ac adapter the laptop powered on, generated a report of non-OEM AC Adapter and time/date not set. Went into BIOS and made necessary changes to time/date. Machine tripped Bitlocker and had to access clients Microsoft Account to obtain Bitlocker code. Booted into Windows and ran Dell Support Assist hardware scan which reported no issues but multiple updates available. BIOS Update would not install as a battery was not detected. Went to Dell's support page for this model and manually downloaded the BIOS Firmware Update. After opening the BIOS Update and clicking the Settings Gear and adding "/forceit" in the command line option, the BIOS update was allowed to run without a battery connected. Use caution doing this as a BIOS Update failure can brick your board (Source: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000134938/forcing-a-bios-update-without-the-ac-adapter-attached-on-a-dell-laptop) After BIOS Update the computer restarted into Windows, update installation confirmed, machine was shut down. Lithium Ion Battery and CMOS Battery were reconnected and the device successfully booted with no further issues.

BIOS was updated from Version 1.5.0 Release Date 5/29/2019 to Version 1.14.0 Release Date 5/24/2022
