[G3 3590] How to activate G-Mode with lid closed?

Hello,

Hope y'all are doing well!

I want to know that if there is any method to activate the G-Mode without clicking laptop's F7 (G-Key).

I tried Fn+F7 on Windows' On-Screen Keyboard, though it did not work.

Thank you & stay healthy!

Quick update:

Dell rep told me that there was no way to activate G-Mode other than clicking the F7 key. They will ask AWCC dev team to add other methods of activation.

@Briangross  pressing the Xbox button on an Xbox controller activates Game Mode.  Judging by the OP's description and the G3 3590's product page here, what the OP is calling "G-Mode" appears to be "Game Shift", which is something specific to this system, or at least some Dell systems that support it.  According to the description on that linked product page, it runs the fans at max speed in order to allow the hardware to run at max performance.

@DrHamburglar  if the only way to activate this is with a Fn key, then there might not be a way to trigger that from an external keyboard.  Since the description on that page mentions Alienware Command Center (even though it's a non-Alienware system?), I would recommend looking through that application to see if it allows you to assign some other hotkey or hotkey combination that doesn't involve the Fn key in order to toggle Game Shift mode.  If the application doesn't offer that and the system firmware truly only allows this to be toggled using that Fn key combination, then you wouldn't be able to work around that because the "Fn" key isn't even seen by the OS, which means you can't use a utility within the OS to emulate it from some other key.  Certain Fn key combinations such as volume and brightness control cause the system to pass a specific keyboard scan code up to the OS because the OS supports using those codes to manage those functions, but even there the OS doesn't see that the Fn key was used; it just sees the result of that particular key combination.  But Game Shift wouldn't be something the OS would have native support for, so the system likely wouldn't even pass anything up to the OS at all when you pressed that key combination up to the OS.  But again, if Alienware Command Center offers a way to use some other key combination to pass that command down to the system firmware, then that might work.

Yes , hit the Xbox button on your gamepad if you have a Xbox controller hooked up

Thank you for your input!

Unfortunately the Alienware Command Center does not allow me to click the "G", nor does it offer any button/switch to turn on the "G". For now the only way to activate G-Mode is by opening the lid and click F7.

Hope Dell will fix it soon.alienware oc.png

Despite my initial skepticism, and after a careful check.. this little batch file worked perfectly. Just what I needed. Thanks.

You need to update the Alien command centre (AWC). This feature works with this tool.

So if you want to use this shortcut for the tool then you must keep the AWC updated and actively running in background.

In case you have the tool and shortcut key i.e., fn+F7 is not working then first open AWC tool then try the shortcut key. You can hear the laptop fan noise once it is activated.

Hi, i have another solution for this, you can press F17, I know... BUT in Windows you can use shift+F7 to do, or like my case, i used a macro to copy that button, you can do it by a stream deck (my case) or by a macro key in logitech keyboard (I tested)

Yes. Just press F17 by using AHK . Like this:

~Capslock & t::
    send {F17}
return

 Then you can use "left Capslock and t" to enable and disable G-mode

I wrote a PowerShell Script with and a Visual Basic Script to run it with 1 click.

Just start run_manager.vbs to make sure that the Alienware Command Center (AWCC) is actively running and can handle the keystroke to toggle G-Mode. Once AWCC is ready, the keystroke from the script is pressed. (Administrator rights required!)

If there are any problems, or there are suggestions for improvement, I will revise the script.
