Yes you can. The specs for your system are below for storage. But Crucial specs are here and they list up to a 2 TB SSD 2.5" SATA drive as compatible. You can also install an M.2 NVMe/PCIe SSD up to 1 TB.

What exactly does "can't get it to work" mean?
A SSD either fits or doesn't fit.

I am guessing the drive installed OK but it was not seen by the system.

Open the disc manager. The drive needs to be partitioned and formatted before Windows can use it.
Start-run-discmgmt.msc

Yes, you can install an SSD at the HDD slot.
The SSD needs to be a 2.5" SATA SSD as only those SSDs are compatible to be used at the space of HDDs.

Does it mean that M2 slot accept SATA up to 128G? because my M2 SSD disk is SATA with 256G
I installed a 1TB SATA SSD
