I agree with JOcean. Microsoft Defender is an excellent choice. It works seamlessly with other Windows components, rarely causes issues and independent testing confirms that it stops most viruses and some other malware. As long as the computer is used by a reasonably-careful user, Defender is a solid choice.
Now, if I think that the user is not so careful and may visit sketchy sites or click on email links that they should not (yes, I have such clients), then I might choose another tool. I might choose an anti-virus that independent testing says catches somewhat more viruses, such as Kaspersky. I might also add protection from other malware that anti-virus tools won't catch, such as Malwarebytes.
I also suggest changing Folder Options settings so that it will always show file extensions (default is to hide file extensions). I believe that it's better if users see file extensions so that they will recognize when a file extension is of a risky type (e.g. .exe, .com, .msc, .reg).

Personally I have always used Microsoft Defender. It consistently rates as one of the best at AV Test here. And it has minimal effect on system resources.
