Dell Inspiron | Screen Cracked

Hello,

Last week I purchased a Dell Inspiron 7391 13'' i7. Just one week after purchase, the screen was cracked, starting from the low right side of the screen.

I called the Dell Support and was asked to send pictures of the damage to be sent to the Service department.

I was really furious when I found out that the issue was recorded as "accidental damage", probably in order to avoid covering the cost from my guarantee. This is ridiculous, given that there was no mistreatment; no drop or abuse from my side. I simple found the screen in this condition one morning when i opened my Laptop.

While waiting the call from the Technical support I wonder: Did any other Inspiron user experience the same issue? The person I talked to from the C.C., told me that the only case they have experienced up to now, is from users cracking the screen by using to much power when closing the laptop. Yet,  I found some older threads with people experiencing the same situation on older models as mine!

Also I am wondering what is the official response from DELL?  Because it is rather odd all people describing the exact same issue to  "accidentally damage" their laptop. Do they recognize a case here or not?

Last but not least, even if the expenses are covered through my guaranty, given that I didn't do any "accidental damage" to my laptop, in what way am I protected as a consumer if the same issue reoccurs in the future?

Thanks

Petros

Hi. I had the same issue but I was able to reply to the 2nd PM. I already lodged a claim will Dell by then anyways so don't think it helped me in any way by responding.

But I was able to get Dell to repair my laptop without any costs to me so I am happy with the outcome. But I still think there is a design flaw with that screen/hinge so I think there is a high possibility that it will crack again but I want to be positive and hopefully it won't. That screen is definitely not designed to withstand the full potential of it being a 2in1 and I only changed it to the tablet and back to laptop mode 2 times when I initially got it just to see it in action and not long after that the screen cracked.

Anyways good outcome for me and really hope the rest of you will get Dell to fix yours and the screen will last and won't crack.

Cheers

Well yes is your warranty covers Accidental Damage and for how long. I suggest you

To get this information you need to log on to support, enter your model number and most importantly Enter your Service Tag Number.

Once you're in support for your particular notebook see what Warranty you have. Upgrade to the warranty that you think you need for the future. Dell offers many different warranties

Also if your notebook is only a week old, you may have a return period of 2 to 4 weeks to return for a replacement or refund depending on what your Retailer offers. I get mine from Amazon they offer 30 days tor return. With a broken Screen you're going to have issues as that is usually Damage or Accidental Damage

Hi

Same thing happened with me, I bought Inspiron 7000 7391 2-in-1 laptop in March 2020. After 4 months, suddenly one day I open my laptop and noticed a crack on my screen at the lower right end. Am pretty sure, I did drop it or put any thing heavy on it. Not sure how it got cracked. Then while searching on internet found this thread which is related to same model.

Petros, did you get your screen fixed under warranty? Can you share some details on what was the resolution you got?

Thanks

Sunil K.

And same thing happened to me!

My laptop is nearly 2 months old and is staying flat on a desk never moving. I am working from home and have it connected to a second screen.

One day I open the laptop and see a crack! Guessing that this 2 in 1 screen is terribly made?

Or should we not open and close the lid on a 2 in 1 laptop by Dell.

I am very disappointed in the general quality of this laptop Dell. The mouse pad was misfunctioning first (Dell has now fixed it). I have white blemishes shades/ghosting on the top of the screen and now a crack screen all in 2.

Another part that I hate about this laptop: the ventilator is always one and quite loud! Don't do video conferencing with it.

No, this is all your fault;

According to DELL, you or someone broke the screen and all the people posting the same issue are doing so in purpose, in order to damage the company's reputation.

NO NO NO.. I have had mine LESS than 3 days and the screen cracked in exactly the same place on the lower right where the hinge is.  The cursor stops periodically and the screen shakes (I took a video and showed it to the Geek Squad manager).  He said I must have put something in the joint (NO!) and they don't cover physical damage. It is now having a "full diagnostic" .   It is a design flaw in the hinge. Grrr...

Hey Maya,

I spent 8 months with them, contacting them repeatedly via email  & via phone in order to reach to a solution and finally close the issue. And the problem appeared in the first 10 days. Of course the company did not accept my argument, I was lucky enough though to have my laptop replaced because they couldn’t find the spare part to replace the cracked screen.

This was the worst after sales experience I have ever had in my life. And we are talking about a 1.500€ laptop.

Have patience and claim your rights. At least now there is a thread with similar cases available to support your case.

Best,

P.

I bought my Dell 7500 2 in 1 June/July 2020 and this weekend I ALSO found my screen to be cracked in the lower right side by the hinge. Because it was only in the very black part of the screen, I never saw it until I took my laptop to a very bright room. It could have been there for days/weeks for all I know. My laptop has never been dropped, anything dropped on it, thrown, tossed, hit NOTHING!!!! I called in and they are telling me this is accidental damage when the initial crack on the screen is very evident it has something to do with the weakness of the right hinge and opening/closing the screen. They told me to call back to try and get it covered under warranty but I have a feeling this isn't going to work. Was anyone able to get theirs covered under warranty?

Hi all. My screen has also cracked on my Dell Inspirion 7506, 15" 2-in-1 Laptop!!! It starts from the bottom right-hand side and across to the top where the camera is. I have only purchased it on the 3/10/2021. The laptop hasn’t left my house or desk yet as I work from home on it. It probably be hard to proof as they will come back that I have caused the damage but to me it appears that there might be an issue with the screen on these as there is few cases now. How can it crack so easily when it is a 2in1 and should be made to last when you could be converting it from the laptop to the tablet mode frequently?

I am yet to contact Dell Support but has anyone had any luck with Dell repairing it under warranty or the cost of a new screen?

I have tried taking some pictures but it is very hard to take them as the screen is black and makes it hard to see the crack.

Sorry to hear about your misfortunate. Looks like it started on the right side of the hinge, which is exactly where mine started. Maybe it's time to seek out a lawyer and make this a class action case. My screen is STILL cracked from my post from 3/2021, as Dell would not cover it and considers it "accidental", when just like you, my laptop had never left my desk, been dropped, stepped on, thrown or mishandled in anyway. I am going to reach out to some lawyers and get their take to see if we have a case here. No way ALL of us are making the same mistake with the same products.

Hi. I have contacted Dell today as well as they have PM'd me on here to provide further info. My case has been apparently escalated further to make a decision. I have given them few links including this one that others have the same issue so there is definitely a defect with the screen/LCD Panel etc and the cracks are not caused by the user. I will advise of the outcome and I will fight it.

I can’t believe that they are asking 2.5k( I did buy it on special for 1.4K) for it when the screen cracks just by sitting on a desk!!! I can’t even imagine what would happen if I actually took it somewhere to use it’s 2in1 potential and purpose.

Let me know how you or anyone else went.

Cheers

Apparently Dell is watching this thread, as I was sent 3 private messages asking for my Service Tag/Express Service Code. When I try to reply to any one of the three messages, I get the following error, "You have reached the limit for number of private messages that you can send for now. Please try again later." Why, oh why Dell?Dell02.pngDell01.png

I am also getting private messages asking for my Service Tag/Express Service Code. But currently, I can reply on that thread.
Thanks for letting people know, this happens too.
