DELL Inspiron 6400 RAM, CPU, SSD and Windows

Hi people, simple and direct:

1- Does this laptop supports T5500, T5600, T7400 or T7600 CPUs with A17 Bios version?

2- I bought it used, not brand-new with Samsung memories DDR2-800, can I maintain or should I put DDR2-667 RAM? It runs smoothly with 4 GB, but I am forcing this laptop or it really supports 4 GB or even more?

3- I have a Toshiba Sata-1 120 GB HDD, I want a upgrade. It has 5.0V 1.0A, can I put a SSD with different V and A or not? Can I also put a SSD? Any SSD from any brand or a special one?

4- Can I put Windows 10 x86 on this laptop or should I stay with 8.1?

Thanks community for the chance to put my questions here. Cheers.

I understand, but I like this laptop so much, I don't want and won't sell it.

The 6400 is actually a 13 yr old XP laptop that is not suitable for any kind of an upgrade. It is amazing that you are running windows 8.1. There are no windows 10 or 8.1 Dell drivers available. Probably best to stick with what you have working now.

Dell users trust Crucial and they say 2 GB ram is the max--

Welcome to the Dell Community  @Marcgomes

DDR2-6400 "800 MHz" will be fine and so will 4GB total.

Most 256GB or 512GB SSD's will work.

There are many "Sellers" on eBay selling E6400's with W10 4GB memory.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-E6400-Latitude-Laptop-Computer-Dual-Core-4GB-320GB-WiFi-DVD-Windows-10/352305935880?hash=item520711f608:g:snYAAOSwS6Zavlzw:sc:UPSGround!33772!US!-1

If you like W8.1 then keep it.

I would not upgrade to W10 and for me I would go with W7. "Just my opinion I hate W8"

As far as the CPU I would have to test a few to make sure they work.

What CPU do you have installed know???

Best regards,

U2

@Marcgomes

That is one of the slowest CPU's for that model. "Only one slower the T1200"

I have hundreds of E6400's at work.

I will pull one off the shelf in the morning and test a few CPU's and let you know what I find then.

My bad @Marcgomes

I just got home.

I am so used to seeing E6400

I will see if we have some "6400's" in the morning and let you know then.

@Marcgomes

I can verify that 4GB does work.

I found only one 6400 and it was a Core Solo.

So I went to find some CPU's to try, and found that we only have i3, i5, and i7 processors.

Everything below that has been recycled.

We are saving more but there was only a few to choose from.

So the only reference then would be:

Intel Core Duo T2050 CPU upgrade:

http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_Duo/T2050.html

Again I apologize for any confusion.

This 13 year old model has a SATA port so can accept a 2.5 " SSD. It can also accept 4 GB of RAM but can only use up to 3.25 GB of it.It runs Windows 10 Version 1903 32 Bit okay, it should also be borderline for 64 Bit (but there is no point in installing 64 Bit due to the inability to use more than 4 GB of RAM). The cost of the SSD, RAM and Windows 10 License are however more than the laptop is worth.

@Philip_Yip

If you took time to read through the thread you would have noticed the OP had already installed 4GB of memory, installed a 120GB SSD and upgraded the CPU.

And I quote:

"It runs smoothly with 4 GB."

"T5500 and SSD installed, performance = super."

Best regards,

U2
