Experiencing a Dell G15 Gaming Laptop that won't turn on and displays a blank screen can be concerning, and there could be various reasons behind this issue. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

1. Check the Power Adapter and Outlet:

  • Ensure that the power adapter is plugged into both the laptop and a functional power outlet.
  • Verify that the power adapter's LED indicator is on, indicating it's providing power.

2. Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect the laptop from the power source.
  • Remove the battery, if possible.
  • Hold down the power button for about 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter.
  • Attempt to power on the laptop.

3. Test Different Power Outlet:

  • Try connecting the laptop to a different power outlet to rule out any issues with the original outlet.

4. Check for LED Indicators:

  • Look for any LED indicators on the laptop that might provide information about its status, such as power and battery indicators.

5. Test with External Display:

  • Connect the laptop to an external monitor or TV using the appropriate cable (HDMI, DisplayPort, etc.).
  • If the external display shows an image, it might indicate a display-related issue on the laptop's screen.

6. Re-seat RAM and Storage:

  • If you're comfortable with opening the laptop's back cover, try re-seating the RAM modules and storage drive. Sometimes loose connections can cause startup issues.

7. Check for Overheating:

  • Overheating can cause laptops to shut down to protect the hardware. Make sure the laptop's vents and fans are not obstructed by dust or debris.

8. BIOS Reset:

  • Some issues can be related to incorrect BIOS settings. Reset the BIOS to its default settings:
    • Turn off the laptop.
    • Press and hold the appropriate key (often F2) to access the BIOS settings.
    • Look for an option to reset the BIOS settings to default.

9. Perform a System Restore:

  • If the issue started after a recent software change, you can try performing a system restore to a point when the laptop was functioning correctly.

10. Contact Dell Support:

  • If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's recommended to contact Dell's customer support for further assistance. There could be underlying hardware issues that require professional attention.

Remember that troubleshooting hardware issues can sometimes involve complex steps. If you're not comfortable with these steps, seeking assistance from Dell's customer support or a professional technician is advisable.

See if you can get a screen test to work.  Hold D through powerup.  You should see a series of screen self-tests initiate.

If the screen tests OK, the LED blink interpretations are below; it appears to be a firmware issue.

For fixing the black screen of your Dell laptop, unplugging and detaching its battery is often suggested. Along with this, you can also hold down the Power button of the device. On releasing it after 30 seconds, the laptop may turn on.

When your Dell G15 gaming laptop is not turning on and you're seeing a blank screen, it can be caused by a variety of factors. Here's a step-by-step troubleshooting guide to help you identify and potentially resolve the issue:

  1. Check Power and Connections:

    • Ensure that the laptop is properly connected to a power source. If you're using a charger, make sure it's plugged in securely and that the outlet is working. Also, check that the battery is properly seated.
  2. Power Button and Hard Reset:

    • Press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds to perform a hard reset. This can sometimes clear any residual power and reset the hardware.
  3. External Display:

    • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using the appropriate cable (HDMI, DisplayPort) to see if there's any display output on the external screen. This will help determine if the issue is with the laptop's display.
  4. Brightness and Display Output:

    • Sometimes, the laptop's display brightness might be set too low. Try increasing the brightness using the keyboard shortcuts.
    • Also, use the keyboard shortcuts to switch between display output modes (e.g., laptop screen, external monitor).
  5. Battery Drain:

    • If the laptop's battery is completely drained, it might not turn on even when connected to a power source. Leave the laptop connected to the charger for a while and try turning it on again.
  6. Remove External Devices:

    • Disconnect any external devices (USB drives, external hard drives, etc.) and try turning on the laptop again. Sometimes, a malfunctioning external device can prevent the laptop from starting.
  7. Check RAM and Storage:

    • If the laptop's RAM or storage is faulty or improperly seated, it can prevent the laptop from starting. Try reseating the RAM modules and storage devices.
  8. Hardware Disconnect:

    • If you're comfortable with hardware, you can try disconnecting and reconnecting components like RAM, storage, and battery to ensure they are properly seated.
  9. BIOS/UEFI Reset:

    • Some laptops have a button or procedure to reset the BIOS or UEFI settings to defaults. Refer to your laptop's manual for instructions on how to do this.
  10. Faulty Hardware:

    • If none of the above steps work, it's possible that there is a hardware issue. This could be a malfunctioning motherboard, graphics card, or other component. In this case, it's recommended to contact Dell support or visit a professional technician for further assistance.
  11. Warranty Support:

    • If your laptop is still under warranty, consider reaching out to Dell's customer support for assistance. They might be able to guide you through troubleshooting or arrange for repairs if necessary.

Remember that troubleshooting hardware issues can sometimes be complex, and if you're not comfortable with the steps involved, it's best to seek help from a professional technician or Dell's support services.

This is an ongoing (and as far as I know, unsolved issue). It seems to be caused by the drivers that nvidia updated about 6-9 months ago. Before that, my system worked just fine.

After restoring the system, it worked again. Then I updated drivers and it broke out again, only working with external monitors. The most recent nvidia driver update (Dec 2023) killed external monitor display as well, so now I have nothing.

Someone please fix this issue!!
