Dell G15 5515 Screen Brightness Issue

I have a new Dell G15 5515, AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 on Windows 11 Pro 23H2.

I am unable to change my laptop display brightness – it is permanently stuck at 100%. The Windows toggles / sliders move, but the brightness doesn't change (even on Battery Saver).

I am on the latest Dell BIOS ver. 1.16.0 and Nvidia driver ver. 555.85. I have already followed most of the troubleshooting guidelines online of changing the power plan settings etc., and even reinstalled Windows, but the problem persists.

There are several other forums with people having the same issue since last year. Disabling Hybrid Graphics in Bios allows the brightness to be changed, but this is a temporary workaround (that increases battery consumption), not a permanent fix. A solution should not come at the cost of an important feature. Downgrading to an old driver and waiving future updates is also not a viable permanent solution.

@DELL-Cares Could you please help to escalate this to the relevant department that would be able to work on a permanent fix?

Update:

After doing some research, I've figured out that this issue is in fact not related to the BIOS or Nvidia graphics drivers, but is instead caused by the AMD Radeon graphics driver.

It therefore makes sense that the screen brightness issue is bypassed when disabling Optimus in BIOS settings, since the system then bypasses the AMD graphics driver which causes the problem, and only uses the Nvidia graphics driver.

Installing Version 31.0.12024.0 of the AMD Radeon graphics driver fixes the problem. You can have Optimus enabled, and the screen brightness adjustment will work. Be sure to tick the "Factory Reset" box when installing the driver.

Note: You will also have to stop Windows Update from automatically performing driver updates, otherwise it will automatically install the latest AMD Radeon graphics driver the next time you update, and you will be sitting with the same problem again. Your computer will continue to receive security and other patches after completing these steps, but drivers will be excluded. If you are like me, you probably prefer to install the latest drivers from Dell's website manually anyway.

On Windows 11 Pro, follow these steps:

  1. Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
  2. Type gpedit.msc and click OK to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
  3. Browse the following path:
    • Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage updates offered from Windows Update
  4. On the right side, double-click the Do not include drivers with Windows Update policy.
  5. Select the Enabled option.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Click OK.
