Charging problems, please help

Hello,

I have recently had my laptop repaired through Currys. They replaced the battery's and gave me a new charger. The battery's cost a good chunk of my money, as they weren't on insurance.

It has been charging and working fine since I got it back (few weeks), up until about an hour ago. My PC started lagging out of nowhere. I couldn't run websites smoothly, nor run a game. I first restarted my laptop. Didn't work. I checked my pc for updates, then restarted my laptop to update it. After restarting, it came up with a pop- up saying:

"The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge

Please connect a DELL 45W AC adapter or greater"

When I plug in my charger, the charging light doesn't stay on. It turns off. The battery icon says that my laptop is charging, but the battery percentage isn't increasing.

I have not rammed the charger into the charging port: I've treated my laptop consciously since I got it back.

Please help me understand what I can do to fix this. I'm upset that my laptop's battery is still having problems.

My charger says that it's a DELL 65W AC Adapter. So it should be charging my laptop fine

There's a short somewhere if the charging cuts out when you connect the adapter.  If you've already tried a new OEM adapter, it's either the DC input jack that's the issue, or the charge circuit itself.

The DC jack would be the first suspect -- it isn't expensive, and if the adapter was covered by warranty, the jack should be as well.  If it doesn't solve the problem, the mainboard needs to be replaced.

@ejn63 through Dell's website, I've looked at the list of updates available for my device, and there are quite a few marked "critical." I'm not going to touch them, but would they possibly have anything to do with my problem? Just to check off that possibility?

Thank you for the advice you have given me :]. I'll request help from my local Currys about the jack, since I know nothing about examining or replacing parts

No -- this is not a software issue.  It's hardware.

@ejn63 Thank you very much for explaining :] I'll just hope it's the jack, I really can't fork out more money on a new motherboard. Have a nice night, I will update if anything changes. I'm leaving my pc on charge, turned off, as the charging light is on when the device is off.

Does the system detect the AC adapter in setup (F2 at powerup)?  It would be very odd if the system were charging and it doesn't.

@ejn63 I'm not sure how to detect in setup. I can only guess that it isn't recognising the adapter, because it's popping up and saying that the AC power adapter cannot be determined. It's a white screen from DELL support assist, right as I power up my pc.

It gives me the option to continue, BIOS checkup, or diagnostics. I pressed continue. I checked the charging light whilst my pc is starting up, and it's now off. However, my battery is now at 80% instead of 61%. So my laptop has charged whilst it's off.

My PC lags when I try to run my usual tasks, like a game or Discord from my web browser. As if my PC is trying to conserve power, despite having a high battery percentage. My PC still does not charge when it's powered on.

If the system is charging the battery when powered off, though -- it's unlikely the jack that's the issue.  It's more likely a system board (charge circuit) issue.

@ejn63 So, someone would need to look at my system board (charge circuit) to identify the problem, then I'd have that problem repaired. Hopefully I've understood that, thank-you for your patience and help

This has happened after someone has repaired my batteries, so I'm curious to know whether or not this has caused my current problem. I'm dissatisfied and hoping it won't cost me more money 🤞

@ejn63 I've been sniffing around the internet trying to understand my problem, whilst I'm waiting to be able to take my laptop to be looked at.

Quite a few people have had my problem, and tried to resolve it through different ways.

When I went to DELL update, it has a few updates to complete. One of them is the BIOS update. People have mentioned this is in other threads I've found. Now, the thing is, it comes up with a yellow warning saying I must not remove my power adapter. And when I remove the power adapter, it refuses to let me update it. Meaning that it's identifying the charger.

I know that you said it's not a firmware issue, but I've pressed update through DELL update, and I believe that's downloading the files for me. Sorry if I've done something very wrong, hopefully I don't mess something up

Updating my PC might've fixed my charging issues. My PC is fully charged, since I left the charger in whilst updating. I'll need to wait for it to drain, to check whether or not the charger will still charge pc whilst the pc is on and being used normally. I need to see if the charging light will come on, and if the percentage will increase.

I let it drain to 93%, put the charger back in, and the light turned on. And the pc is, presumably, charging as normal. I will update if anything more happens
