BIOS on Inspiron 5515 not loading after BIOS upgrade

I upgraded BIOS and it's now not loading. I can only see black screen with a dash in top left corner. I tried downgrading BIOS but it won't let me. I tried BIOS recovery but it doesn't help.

Laptop boots into OS fine.

What I didn't try is resetting BIOS to factory settings and I'm reluctant to do it as I'm afraid of secure boot being turned on. I won't be able to boot my Arch Linux with it, and if resetting BIOS won't help with my issue, I won't be able to turn secure boot off.

Are there any other options to try?

Do you know if this particular model had secure boot factory enabled? It came with Windows 10 installed.

Well, I'll answer myself. Maybe it will save someone's day.

efibootmgr was showing some strange entries like this:

Boot0006* UEFI Misc Device VenHw(77e79a3e-e1fb-501f-a7c1-fa1b3412333a){auto_created_boot_option}

I deleted them all with: efibootmgr -b 0006 -B

Not being able to load the BIOS after an update can be concerning, but there are a few steps you can try to recover your Dell Inspiron 5515:

1. Check for Power Issues:

  • Ensure your laptop is plugged into a working outlet and the power adapter is securely connected.
  • Try removing the power cable and battery for 30 seconds, then put them back in and attempt to boot again. This can help clear residual power.

2. Attempt BIOS Recovery:

Dell offers a BIOS recovery tool for Inspiron models released after December 2015. Here's what you can try:

3. Clear CMOS/ NVRAM:

  • This resets BIOS settings to factory defaults. It might help if the update caused a setting incompatibility.
  • Caution: This will erase any custom BIOS settings you had configured.
  • The method to clear CMOS/NVRAM might vary depending on your specific Inspiron 5515 model. You can find instructions in the user manual or by searching online for your specific model and "clear CMOS." Generally, it involves removing the main battery, CMOS battery, and holding the power button for a minute.

4. Contact Dell Support:

If the above steps don't work, it's best to reach out to Dell Support for further assistance. They might have additional recovery options or suggest sending your laptop in for repair.

OP already attempted BIOS recovery.  Resetting BIOS should go before BIOS recovery.  Resetting BIOS should include replacing CMOS battery.  Looks almost like an AI response.
