reload video driver
Inspiron 3847
Lost audio over HDMI cable from PC to TV. I am trying to reload the video driver, ver 20.19.15.4531_A03. I get the message "The driver is not validated for this computer...". I am running WIN10 Pro 64bit.
Please note: As old as this PC is, it still runs fine.

if you are running hdmi from integrated video port HDMI, try do a clean Win 10 Pro (latest version) install and let Win 10 auto update load the Intel graphics driver for the 4th gen cpu. try not to manually delete old driver and download and install Dell driver

@redxps630
Couldn't the graphics driver be deleted in Device Manager, then reboot, and Win10 has/downloads the correct driver?

OP may be trying to manually install Dell driver after an assumed driver corruption. Delete driver in dev mgr is not clean.

@bradthetechnut First thing I tried was to delete the driver in Device Manager. Rebooted, but it did not fix the issue. Video is fine, but to watch a movie on the TV, I have to run a cable from the headphone jack to a BOSE for audio.

Have you tried a different HDMI cable?
Could the problem be with the TV? Can you try using a different HDMI source to send audio to the TV, eg a laptop PC or a game controller...?

@-dml-f3e984 - BTW: Have you confirmed that Windows Sound Output is still set to use HDMI and not Realtek?

Tried a new HDMI cable, I also checked the setting for audio output. In fact I have a desktop shortcut that brings up the SOUND applet because sometimes we have to manually set the output for my wife's bluetooth speaker.
I think an update of the driver or WIN10 caused the problem and I think I would like to get a new machine and use this one for LINUX.
It's just frustrating with such a solid machine (16GB, one 1 TB SSD and 1 1TB HD) to give up on it.

Did you try a different HDMI audio source for the TV?
Did you open the NVidia control panel and check the settings under Display>Set up digital audio?

NVIDIA? The display adaptor is an Intel HD Graphics 4600.

Sorry 'bout that. I meant opening the HD Graphics control panel to look for options to enable sound over HDMI.
What's listed under Sound, video and game controllers in Device Manager? Any of them showing any error?
Is the Intel Chipset Driver up-to-date?
Have you run DDU (free) to make sure you completely remove existing Intel HD driver before installing a fresh download of latest version of Intel HD driver for your PC?
