My Inspiron 530s is acting strangely

Well, I have been experiencing some issues with this Inspiron Dell 530s of mines. It hasn’t been touched in a few months or so since I left with my grandparents.

I finally remembered that it there and attempted to see if it worked. And which case it did, but I had to work on it a little bit.

Now that I have brought it with me back home i have been experiencing the same problem once again.

The Dell 530s isn’t like turning on when I press the power button, it’s like the thing is completely dead. But when I take it apart I see a orange light, which idk what that means.

After a while I simply gave up and now is trying to see if you or someone else can help me out this problem. I followed the steps with removing the rams and cleaning it out, also removing the dust from the fan as well. Still isn’t turning on- The power button is blank when I press it. And I look on my monitor to turn it on it goes directly into power saving mode.

please give me a response of an solution..

orange light, which idk what that means.  it means 5v standby works but not that the power supply is good.

The Green LED on the back shows power available not power supply is ok. Not all models have BIST Built in Self Test button.

CMOS battery is likely dead and at least part of the issue.

Most grocery stores have these but YMMV

For starters, replace the motherboard battery which probably died long ago. CR2032, 3-volt coin cell, ~$2. Check the Service Manual on page 157 for instructions.

The LED on the motherboard should be on 24/7 when the PC is plugged into a working outlet. It means the motherboard is getting "flea power", but that's not enough to boot the PC.

So if a new battery doesn't help, consider a PSU problem (page 157 in Service Manual).

Check the voltage selection switch setting below the power cord socket (page 17) - BUT ONLY WITH PC FULLY DISCONNECTED FROM THE WALL. And make sure it's set to the correct voltage before reconnecting PC to the outlet.

And if your PC has it, is the PSU LED on or off (page 17) when plugged into a working outlet ?

Thank you, I shall do so

What do you mean about if my LED is on or off?

The LED on the back of the PC (#5) should be on whenever it's plugged into a working outlet. So if you're using a power strip or surge protector, remove them, and plug PC directly into the wall and then check the LED. If it's off, then you may have a power supply problem.

The Inspiron 530s manual says: "NOTE: May or may not be available on your computer" , so you might not have that LED on your PC.

#4 is the voltage selector switch.

I do not see the LED for the computer( I don’t see Number 5)

Today I went on to borrow a few batteries from friends to see if they could work, but they did not it seems. Still continuing to get that orange light which means I directly need to buy a new set of batteries.

Wait a nano-second....

An orange LED on the motherboard means it's getting "flea power" from the PSU. That LED is perfectly normal and should be on 27/7 when the PC is connected to a working outlet. But "flea power" isn't enough to boot the PC.

  • Even if PC doesn't boot after installing a fresh CR2032 battery, that LED should still be on. So you need to look elsewhere for your problem.

  • Are you sure the power cord is securely connected to rear of PC?

  • Got another power cord you can test with this PC?

  • If using a surge protector or power strip, remove those and connect PC directly to the wall
