Memory Upgrade in New Inspiron Desktop

Hello. I’ve just bought an Inspiron 3020S. Very happy with it. But I’d like to increase the RAM from a 16GB (single)in DIMM 1 to 32GB by buying another 16GB to add to the spare DIMM2 slot.

Must I use Dell memory to be compatible with what’s there already and maintain warranty? It’s far more expensive than other suppliers for example. But if otherwise it voids the warranty then maybe I’d need to pay up?

Also with the new memory being inserted the CPU would be accessing dual channel. Will the Dell memory be matched to the existing memory - Speed , latency etc… ?

Or would I need to get a matched kit?

You do not have to use Dell RAM and it will not void the warranty. The only consideration is whether the new RAM will be compatible with the existing RAM. The most compatible RAM for Dell systems is Crucial as found here. The ideal solution would be to buy a 32GB kit (2 x 16GB) which would be a matched pair.

@JOcean Thanks for the detailed reply. That’s good to know. I’ve used Crucial before and never had issues so good to know I can use them for the Dell too. It’s my first outing with Dell kit (and on this forum). To be honest I’ve found it very difficult to find any docs on what is permitted under warranty. But what you’ve said is good news indeed. I feel a 2x16GB kit purchase coming on!

@JOcean I take it this an international forum?  Are comments made here applicable to UK too? I only wondered as the crucial link was to their US version of the site. Thanks.

@Pddco

Yes, site is international.  Crucial RAM can also be had on Amazon.

@JOcean Just seen on this forum that someone has done the exact same thing (installed a 32GB kit from Crucial) and it hasn’t worked.

Ive just ordered the same kit myself.

They’ve posted the issue and a Dell representative has responded saying that the BIOS does not ‘see’ non-OEM memory.

Of course it would make sense for Dell to have this tie in. Though it’s quite a premium to be paid.

So are we saying that all upgrade parts ( Memory and  SATA drives for example) come from Dell for them to be recognised and work correctly?

Im not too sure now what I can and cannot do…

@Pddco I have never seen or heard any explanation such as that. Crucial guarantees compatibility and if the RAM does not work you can return it for a refund. I have had a number of Dell systems and always use a variety of 3rd party suppliers with no problems. Not seeing the post you referred to I have no idea of the details such as the type ordered from Crucial so cannot make a determination if the user ordered the correct RAM type and speed. If you have ordered the correct RAM from their web page then install it, and deal with any problems if any arise which I suspect will not.

@JOcean I see your point. Thanks. I’ll install it and see what happens. And report back. I can’t see how to link to the other article. I’ve taken a couple of screen shots. But I can’t seem to attach them to this message. Not to worry.

@JOcean@Pddco

True, if the Crucial RAM doesn't work, it can be returned.

Crucial hasn't been working in many new Dells.  Started seeing it almost regularly in the Optiplex forum.  What has been working is Dell, Hynix (Dell often uses for their OEM), and Samsung.  Dell never guaranteed non-OEM brands to work.  @redxps630 might also be able to elaborate if red wants to.  Since email  notifications haven't been working, harder to tell if that will happen.

I checked userbenchmark.  The Inspiron 3020S didn't come up.  May be too new?

If Crucial doesn't work in a PC, it won't break.

SATA drives haven't been limited to Dell.
