Inspiron 570, CPU upgrade, Phenom II x4 945
Hi all.
This is my first post and I need a little help.
I have an Inspiron 570. It was given to me as a gift because my original desktop decided to die.
I like it. I can play L of Legends and Heartstone. I can't run too many programs at the same time or it'll slow me down when I play games. I actually think this 570 is better than my old desktop, which was a custom build around the same time the 570 came out.
Currently I want to upgrade the processor to a Phenom II x4 945. As far as I know it's 125w and I need a decent heatsink/fan to cool it off. The problem is I can't find anything. The closest thing is a 95w (https://www.amazon.com/Original-Dell-Heatsink-Assembly-Inspiron/dp/B0068QBO8C).
I've been using the 'Uber' guide(Uber Guide) as a reference to kind of get an idea of what I need but a lot of the fan/heatsinks that are compatible are discontinued.
Maybe I can get away with a 125w?
The current rig specs are as follows:
- Amd Athlon II x2 245, 2.9GHz
- RAM: DDR3 1333 4gb(2 x2)
- Stock processor fan
- BIOS version: A06
- 64 bit OS
- Windows 7 ( I tried to go to Windows 10 but it seemed slow.)
Maybe I should just get a 95w processor? Someone mentioned an AMD Athlon II x4 645. I don't think I can overclock anyways, I don't think the motherboard will allow it. I know I can just save up and buy a brand new computer, which I will. But I thought I'd just upgrade us the 570 in the meantime. The only reason I would get a new computer is to play Fallout. I know the 570 is super old but I just figured why not. I don't know, maybe it's not worth it. I mean, it works fine, but I feel like I need at least more RAM (DDR3 1333). I know I can go to 16 gb.
EDIT: Typos

Hi @RainbowRoads ,
I believe you're talking about upgrading to Phenom II x4 945, while 645 only exist in Athlon series.
It's not recommended to use heat silk at an under-wattage way. Check out this discussion with detailed explanation. Instead, Phenom II x4 945 (or even 955) DO have 95w version. Check out details on Wiki. And this 945 on eBay with part number "HDX945WFK4DGM" is exactly the 95w one. Search for part number "HDX955WFK4DGM" will lead you to those 955 at 95w.
And if you're talking about Athlon II X4 645 actually, don't worry, it's a 95w CPU.
One more reference: check out Inspiron 570 builds in Userbenchmark. You can see that 955 owns a not bad CPU benchmarks among all. Worth to read.

@bmcowboy Yes! Thank you for the response and for all this info.
I'm super grateful.
Yes I did mean the 945 I messed that up. I corrected it though.
I had been to the Wiki before but didn't know how to navigate it.
After some searching I found some heatsinks that are compatible with the 125w processors and the socket type(LGA775), so I think I'm gonna go for one of those Phenoms:
980, 975, 970, 965, 950, 945
For some reason I want it to have a high GHz.

Hi!
Does it support B95 B97 B99 CPUs?
Why 3GHz 960T cpu
HD96ZTWFK4DGR
works @800MHz only?
Where is a comprehensive cpu support list???
Thank you
