Dell G5 Gaming Desktop - GPU upgrades

Hey guys, just a quick question about the specs of the Dell G5 for a GPU upgrade. What is the maximum GPU size that can fit this PC? I suppose that the original equipment would be the maximum size but due to technical ability insufficiencies I am unable to remove it to measure.

Dude, listen. You are not supposed to be using 100% of what the PSU is rated at. They are made to be most efficient at 50-60% of their load capacity. Red-lining it is the equivalent of running your car's gas pedal floored all the time. It also doesn't account for any power spikes as well. I recommend you take some time to watch YouTube videos on this and do a little more research.

In the screenshot you sent me, it literally says the absolute minimum recommended PSU is 511 Watts. Don't take my word for it, just look at your own picture. Furthermore, look at the recommended PSU size from the people who actually make this card. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/graphics-cards/rtx-2080-ti/ It says 650W Minimum. That's almost 200W over what we have. You could maybe get by with maybe a quality 550-600W for it, but that would depend on use and your other components. The PSU we have doesn't even have the two 8-pin connectors required to power it. Why, you ask? Simple answer: It's not meant to/capable of running it. Trust me, I've looked into it, just search the forum for my name and you'll see all of it. Do your homework.

To answer your original question again, 8-9 inches max should be okay inside this case, I wouldn't go for more than a dual fan layout inside this one.

Just another quick question, does this computer (Dell G5 5090) have a 8x or 16x bandwidth PCIE slot?

Right, so not much interest, here, the main question I have is what is the maximum length of video card that the Dell G5 5090 can be equipped with? I currently have the 2070 Super but with the 3070 and the 2080 TI as options to upgrade I'm curious about then the dimensions of the case and its capability to accommodate these for an upgrade?

Hey bud, I have a really similar thread on this where we go into depth. The max length of a card according to what I measured shouldn't exceed 8-9 inches max. You could go bigger but you'd have to remove the HDD Cage at the front of the desktop.

Secondly, there's almost no way with the current PSU to support the 3070 or 2080Ti, as it is simply not powerful enough. The max I'd go is probably a 3060 Ti rated at 200W, and that too after undervolting it to stay within safe margins.

I'm currently in talks with Dell support to find out if maybe I can use a larger 3rd party PSU in the case with an adapter, as it would solve many upgrading problems. I might hear back from them in the coming weeks.

G5 power supply does not have standard pin-outs.  It has a six pin and dual 4 pin connections that are not any particular standard.  5 connectors in total.

G5 5090 - 0DXJD9

Nor is it the same as proprietary power supplies used in Optiplex models.

Im not going to assist you in an alternative because I believe that no such option exists. There is even a guy who made his own adapter for a precision workstation.

I am not going to speculate or provide pin outs for the 3 Proprietary connectors on the G5 power supply to the motherboard.

i ran a 3070ti with no problems other than having to cap the output power.  I fashioned a second GPU rail from the CPU lines (two 4pin CPU to 6pin PCIe cables) and powered my card to 100%, but then lowered it when I went 10900k for no apparent reason.

Now I have an HP Omen 3090 in a cut case with an external 850w PSU!

And even the 360w PSU is golden with a 3060ti, but go either of the 3070 cards or even find a Dell manufactured 3080 and chuck in there to this guy’s dismay!

Yes.  You don’t even have to cut the case!

the case is about 10 inches room, so a 2 fan or hybrid will fit.

Hi there - sorry for the necrobump, but (hopefully) quick question as I was curious about upgrading my G5 from the RTX 2060 SUPER it shipped with to a 3060ti.

Am I interpreting you correctly that there really isn't a good, reliable upgrade path to upgrade the stock PSU and install a newer graphics card in this machine? If so, I'm good with the answer, just want to make sure I don't set out on a fool's errand & waste money.
