computer wont boot after new ram

purchased a new ram kit for my dell g5 5000 desktop.

system is about 4 months old. i7-10700f & rtx3070

got a kingston 2x8 kit and it wouldnt boot. thought it was the kit so i got a corsair 2x16 kit and it wouldnt boot either. just kept restarting what seemed like an endless loop.

installed old ram back in and it started after a few tries. runs fine

how can i get this new ram to work?

(edit: i have verified that both of the kits are compatible with my cpu)

Was it DDR4 3200 RAM and was the Kingston KVR type RAM? And by comparison this is the RAM from Crucial that is compatible. Crucial RAM is the most compatible with Dell computers.

@Oso11 -  What size and how many original RAM modules? Are you adding the new pair to the original, or just replacing?

If you have 2 original modules installed, they should have been in 2nd and 4th slots from CPU (matching color retention clips).

Does the new pair work when it's the only RAM installed, using the same slots the originals were in (2 and 4 from CPU)? If the new pair works alone, it's possible they're just not compatible with the original pair...

You could try putting the new pair in the 2nd and 4th slots and putting the original pair in 1st and 3rd slots from CPU.

And you should reset BIOS by removing the motherboard battery and pressing/holding the power button for ~30 sec after you make any changes to the RAM, eg modules installed, slots etc, and then reinstall the battery before trying to boot.

The first kit I tried was kingston 2x8 ddr4 3200 cl16

The second kit I tried was corsair 2x16 ddr4 3200 cl16

Did either of those pairs work alone, without any OEM RAM installed?

No. I only tried using them on their own, without using factory ram

You should try that because that will tell you if the new RAM is even compatible with this system at all, or if it's just not with the factory RAM.

Ram
Four UDIMM slots
Maximum 128GB

RAM CAS Latency counts a lot more than the Mhz Myth.

4266 ram in a Dell is not running 5 times faster than 2133 ram.

Paying Extra for Mhz at the expense of CAS latency is wasted money falling victim to marketing and the Mhz myth.

128GB = 4x32GB
64GB = 2x32GB, 4x16GB
32GB = 1x32GB, 2x16GB
16GB = 1x16GB, 2x8GB
8GB = 1x8GB, 2x4GB

System shipped with 3200MHz memory.
However, with Intel Core i3/i5 processors, it is limited to 2666MHz.
With Intel Core i7/i9 processors, it is limited to 2933MHz.

To be clear from a Dell warranty and policy perspective,
a user should not expect using non-tested/non-validated retail memory sticks to work without issue. Only OEM BIOS and OEM tested/validated memory sticks work without issue
