Where can I find SYMAPI Programmer's Reference?

Up to this point, I've been using the Solutions Enabler 6.2 libraries for my performance monitoring program needs. With versions 6.5 and 7 available now, I'm looking to make a few updates, but I'm having no luck finding the "EMC Solutions Enabler Symmetrix Base Management API Programmers Reference" for those versions.

The latest I have is version 6.2 (300-000-741 REV A08). Does anyone know where I can find the latest versions for 6.5 and 7 for download?

Someone,

I scoured cyberspace for the manual title you referenced & I haven't found it, even using my super secret EMC employee access on powerlink.

Did you get the document off of a document CD, download it from Powerlink or obtain it through.... 'other means' ;) ?

Is there any chance that the SE "documentation roadmap" helps point you in the right direction:

http://powerlink.emc.com/km/live1/en_US/Offering_Technical/Technical_Documentation/300-008-920.pdf

I must admit, searching for this was an excercise in frustration, testing even my Moderator Benevolence... Let us know if the roadmap helps, else we're going to have to resort to... other means to find this.

Dave,

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer! I have been scouring the Powerlink site for a week trying to find this thing.

I have just recently taken over support on this agent, so I had no idea where we got the original doc, and the documentation roadmap makes no mention of it. Your question about where we got it sent me off to talk to our IT support people, and it looks like it came with the 6.2 download of the development SDK. Versions 6.3 and above had no such document, which would help explain why I didn't see a copy with the 6.5 download.

I guess I should try downloading version 7 of the SDK and see if the Programming Reference comes with that.

Why would the Programmer's Reference be bundled with the 6.2 release and not with any other? Where do I look for updates and changes?

Thanks in advance!

Hmm . . . looks like I jumped the gun a little on my response.

Downloaded the SE version 7 SDK for Solaris SPARC and couldn't find any programming references included. Looked back at what the IT guys had given me and noticed that the PDFs weren't part of the SDK bundle. We just put the SDK bundle together in a package with the documentation to make things easier for ourselves later.

So I seem to be back at square one.

Well, not quite. I dug around a little in the earlier SDK files and found the "Solutions Enabler Developers Suite Symmetrix Array API" Release Notes (P/N 300-001-573 Rev A07). The documentation section references the manuals I'm looking for and says that they haven't been updated since 6.2, and that I should see the "EMC Solutions Enabler Release Notes, V6.4" for new features (which I thought was the document I was reading, but I guess not).

It also pointed me to the E-Lab Interoperability Navigator, listed a bunch of document names, and said that for the "most current v6.4 API reference documentation, see the HTML manpage help files zipped together on Powerlink for EMC Partner use".

Well I've looked around the E-Lab (which I've found very hard to use) and can't find anything but references to documentation. No actual docs.

Any ideas?

Not just yet....

This is pretty old vintage.

Me too.

As difficult as this has been for you, I assure you I can wholeheartedly understand your frustration. I am similarly flummoxed. After searching again and finding nothing I went to the SE eng. onsite and we discussed our relevant facts. He's researching right now and may have a lead. Hopefully soon.

I'll update here.

Someone,

The word back from S/E Engineering is that the manual you're looking for was discontinued. As I further understand, the content has been incorporated into the SDK - I believe it's HTML basically... I haven't seen it myself.

Final answer, the manual you're looking for no longer exists, the content is "carried forward" in the SDK.

David,

Thanks so much for tracking this down. I dug around a little in the SE v7 install and found a few files that looked promising, but I'll have to install the SDK to know for sure. I will update here when I have it installed.

Thanks,

Chris

No luck.

Tried the windows install on my desktop box, as that was the easiest and least likely to affect an existing install, but I haven't been able to find any SYMAPI documentation. All that I've found so far is the SYMCLI man pages and the help options on the command line utilities.

Is 3rd party interaction with the SYMAPI not going to be supported going forward? Am I just looking in the wrong place for the API docs?

Hi Chris,

To be clear, you installed the windows SDK? V 7.0?

Let me know.

David,

Yes. For clarity's sake, I ran symcli.exe and got

Symmetrix Command Line Interface (SYMCLI) Version V7.0.0.0 (Edit Level: 915)
built with SYMAPI Version V7.0.0.0 (Edit Level: 915)

Let me know if there's anything else I can do.

Thanks,

Chris

If I may, I'd like to ask a tiny question about the availability of the SYMAPI SDK. Is the SDK available for "normal" customers? When I access the download site on Powerlink, I only see the normal SE releases, but no SDK. Thanks!

Hi Jurgen,

When I say SDK, I'm just referring to the regular Solutions Enabler downloads available by clicking the 'Support > Software Downloads and Licensing > Downloads S > Solutions Enabler' link on the Powerlink homepage. The download includes the SYMAPI shared libraries and, as far as I can tell, used to contain a set of reference manuals that explained the different functions and how to use them.

I was told it was an SDK so that's what I call it, but calling it the Solutions Enabler install package is just as valid. Po-tay-to, po-tah-to.

Hope that helps.

Chris

Hi David,

Just checking in. Any luck locating the Programmer's Reference (or similar)?

Thanks,

Chris

Hello Chris,

I asked late last week after we got the SDK info. I forwarded the question to our local SE resource, who in turn asked the question to the eng. staff. No response so far, I sent the forums email I got off to him asking if he'd made any progress.

He's checking in again w/ the document team.

Once we find anything, we'll update here.
