Symm data migration

I have a plan to move to a new prod symm from DMX2 to DMX3 (no bin file change needed). The DR symm remains unchanged. What are the different methods by which I can implement this and which method is the most efficient, please provide reasons ?. Please also if possible provide the exact commands for each method.

You are asking us to give you a full POC ? (Proof of concept)

Usually with these kind of migrations, you can contact EMC and they will set up a meeting with you to discuss all possibilities.

Think about:
- SRDF
- Open Replicator (that's how we migrated from DMX2 to DMX3 and it worked almost like a charm - OR has been improved a lot so they say now ;) )
- host based mirroring (each DMX2 lun has a DMX3 lun couterpart) (this takes up host resources)
- manual (or scripted and scheduled) copying of data (this takes up host resources)

First you need to make a golden copy of your DMX2 data to your DMX3. If your host cannot go down yet, remain working on it and make sure you have some sort of incremental update plan available (SRDF will continuously update the DMX3 luns, OR has an incremental update feature).
After all data has been copied, stop working on the host, rezone that host to the new DMX3 and resume working on that host.

If all configuration stays the same, I have to advise to use SRDF.
Nothing simpler than that.

If you do require different configuration on the DMX-3 (like different hyper or meta sizes), I have used OpenMigrator software for this, and was extremely pleased with the results.

OpenReplicator is the same as SRDF. But SRDF was built especially for data replications between Symmetrix environments.

OR is not the same as SRDF ! With OR you copy a point in time version of the data, it will not run continuously, like SRDF does. And with OR you can also copy data to symdevs that are larger ! And AFAIK you can copy data to non Symm machines with OR, but I must say I've never tried that.

But I agree: if these 2 boxes are the only 2, use SRDF between them ! It's by far the easiest way !
