Remote SNAP using device file

Is it possible to use device file for remote snap ?
All examples in documentation with device groups.
In SE's release notes "The new remote snap functionality allows you to use a device group or composite group to snap a copy on a remote Symmetrix array".
Nothing about device file.

i am afraid not ..i just looked through timefinder docs and could not find anything about that, looks like the only option is to use device groups, or execute snap commands on the remote host ..if it's windows you could use psexec or ssh for Unix/Linux

I would take a look at SE v6.4

The CLI Command reference indicates that you can issue Symmsnap commands with "-sid XXXX -file " so it should work.

I know that most documentation I could find told me I could only issue symmclone commands remotely if I used BCVs as targets, but I have it working under SE v6.4 using a device file and STD devices as the targets.

It's worth a try.

that's right ..i always use -sid for doing srdf command over srdf links so symsnap/symmir should not be any different i just always used with device groups and using BRBCVs as my target devices. I am going to give it a shot tomorrow :).

That's the "-sid XXXX" part of the command. You plug in the last 4 (or 3 or 2 depending on your environment) digits of the Symm serial number and it will direct the command to that array. This is the same option you can use for many symCLI commands to point to a specific/remote array. As long as symAPI knows about the array you are good to go.

Well, let me know how it works.

For now I'm just using it to create remote clone sessions with STD devices as the target (which I'm supposedly unable to do), but we might need to do the remote SNAP control in the future.

Do you have SE installed on a host connected to your remote symm?

symsnap -file to a remote symm is supported.
