No symconfigure command is executing

symconfigure command is not working on my ECC server. When I issued "symconfigure -sid .... prepare [file name]", it waits for a while and exits saying: "Error occurred while starting; Access to the configuration server could not be established." What could be the reason and solution to this problem?

Well, sil error code: -111 implies SymmWin isn't running on the Service Processor (as per Primus emc125303).

Check whether this is the case by looking on the SP and start it up (from the Start Button) if its not.

If it is running, there could be a communications issue within the box. Call your local EMC Customer Service to investigate.

i've had this before too ..your service process is probably hung. Have EMC reboot it, or do it yourself.

You really shouldn't reboot it yourself because something else may be going on in the service processor. I would call your CE or the PSE lab.

I used to work in EMC support providing support for symconfigure (all of Solutions Enabler) and I have to agree that the SP does probably need a reboot. But have it checked out just in case by a CE or the PSE lab. If it is messed up bad enough, the PSE won't be able to dial in anyway.

i meant to say service processor (laptop or 1-U server in the frame). If you run symconfigure -sid xxx verify ..and it stalls again ..that's what it is.

if i have a script that got hung in the middle of my symconfigure session..i definitely call EMC to either finish it for me or roll it back ...and then release any locks, but sometimes i come in and nobody's running and configuration changes, and this thing is stuck ..i'll bounce it myself. I feel comfortable doing that ... if you do not ..call EMC.

I have rebooted the SP but still the same problem persists. Does it take time to update? I have noticed one more thing when i ran "symacl list -v" it shows "Access Control: Disabled". Another thing is if I go to Masking -> VCMDB Management, it shows 3 options and one of which is "Make Active...". This option is in active mode. Could it be a reason that VCMDB has become inactive and causing this issue?

Take a look at the Solutions Enabler log file(s) in \Program Files\EMC\SYMAPI\log (on Windows) or /var/symapi/log on Unix.

The logfile may give you some details as to why symconfigure isn't working.

Rebooting the SP should only be done as a last resort under the direction of the Support Lab - its much better to investigate the issue rather than blindly reboot. There could be running or hung scripts, remotely executing scripts (ie across SRDF), Optimizer Swaps, or even someone dialled in.
