How to perform a "live" activate using TimeFinder clone and Oracle

Currently, when we do an activation, all of the databases (8 of them) running on our system are shutdown before the activation and re-started after the activation has completed. In essence, we quiet everything on the system and then perform the activate. We do this because when we rolled this out years ago, it was recommended by a contractor to do this for the "cleanest" method to perform an activate. The idea was if you performed a "hot" split, (keep all of your db's running), you may corrupt databases.

I know "technically" you do not have to quiet all of the applications and databases before we perform the activation, but if you do not, is there a chance for corruption to occur if you had to restore the data from the BCV's. My understanding is there may be new technology on the EMC side that can handle doing a "hot" split and keep the integrity of the system intact.

My question is this. How do you perform a "live/hot" activation when you have multiple Oracle databases (Oracle 9 and 10) running . I am trying to identify what options we have that would allow us to do a split at anytime of the day or night and not jeopardize the integrity of our system if we leave all of our applications running.

We are currently using TimeFinder clone tied in with Solutions enabler 6.4 on an HP9000 system running HP-UX 11.11.

Let me know if this makes sense or you need any additional information.

one word ...oracle hot backup mode :)

search for these papers:

Another (different) word.. Option "-consistent" while activating clones :-)

While with hot backup you talk to Oracle and gently rub its head asking to stay quiet while you take a snapshot of the database, with -consistent you point big strobes against your database and take a snapshot with the lens almost fully closed with a fast speed and the big strobes gives the right exposure ... so even if the subject will move, you'll get a sharp picture :-)

Hmmm what are you saying ?? Isn't this thread about photography ?? :-)

Forgive me for the joke .. :-) .. But it's a nice picture of what's going on ....

While with hot backup you ask Oracle to do most of the work, with "consistent activation" you ask the storage to do most of the work. With -consistent the FA will "hold" writes from the host while activating the clones. This will give you a "consistent" image of your database on the clones (but remember that you still have to fsck the filesystems and that the database will need to recover something).

AFAIK this is the only way to go if your db isn't in "archive log mode" and you can't shut it down while activating clones.

Now let's back to my example .. If you want to take pictures of your little child you can choose to use a cheap camera and "do it yourself" at your home (and you'll need to rub your child's head and ask him/her to stay quiet) or you can go at a studio and ask a photographer to take pictures with its heavy camera and big strobes .. Obviously the first is free .. the second will cost you more :-)

You can do a hot backup of Oracle ,SQL ,IBM DB2,Sybase or Informix databases using Symioctl which comes with timefinder.Refer to Symcli command reference for your particular situation.

I currently use it for my SQL 2005 and 2000 databases.

I don't think symioctl is part of Solution Enabler also on HP-UX .. ;-)
