Flashcopy under an IBM ESS vs EMC DMX3

We will soon be migrating from an ESS to a DMX. Currently we do nightly and weekly flashcopy backups of our production Storage groups. We use FDRInstant to flash volumes to an offline device and the dump the offline device to Tape using FDR.

Following the migration, we plan to use EMC's Flashcopy which will be called using FDRSNAP, and then dumping to tape. Anyone out have any experice with this or EMC's implementation of Flashcopy? If so, any gotcha's or lessons learned.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hello Kevin,

I found this thread which seems to have a small bit of relevance.

http://forums.emc.com/forums/thread.jspa?tstart=0&threadID=62636

In addition, there are 6 EMC Knowledgebase entries which mention 'FDRSNAP' and I saw it mentioned in a couple of our timefinder maintenance files (that makes sense; if there are knowledgebase entries, you can bet that we either have a fix or are working on one).

I only found 1 whitepaper which mentions flashcopy in passing. So for the 'gotchas', check out the knowledgebase entries.

Hope this helps

Hi there
I know this happened a long time ago. We moved from IBM ESS to EMC DMX3 a couple of years ago. Would you be willing to discuss any of the questions/problems etc you may have had. We also use FDRinstant to do our backups.

A couple 'new' entries this year show up on a knowledgebase search for "FDRINSTANT", FDRCOPY showed similar results but not anything from 2009.

&

I'm not seeing any new instances of issues. As I mentioned in the earlier post, the knowledgebase search turned up a few hits on known issues, and this discussion. Let's see if others turn up any helpful hints...

Hello,

Our migration from the ESS to the DMX has long since been completed. We did have a few issue's with FDRInstant that we resolved. We are currently fighting issue's with the EMC Resource Pack. The issue is now back with Engineering for the 2nd time and we are waiting to hear from them. If you wish to discuss anything regarding the migration or the resource pack issue's, let me know.
