Cannot run any std commands without receiving error

Hi All,

When performing the symcfg discover command on my win 2003 sp1 host, with solutions enabler 6.3.2, resource pak 3.9, qlogic hba, i receive the error: "The gatekeeper device (while using the Base Daemon) has an error (please see the log file)".

The same error arises if other resource pack commands are run as well - I was trying to use the symntctl commands.

I was having this issue earlier on a different machine. I built a new machine (taking the hba from the prior server) and it ran fine. I tested the commands and everything was working. Since then, an establish has been run and now it's not working. I am trying to mount the BCV volumes. I'm confident that all mapping and masking is correct as I can see all the drives if I run the syminq command.

I have recreated the symapi.db file, I have stopped the storapid service then try running the command, i have edited the daemon_options file with Storapid:client_use=never, and referenced Primus ID emc107531 (which didn't pertain in my case) - all of these to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!

This usually happens when you don't have enough gatekeeper (6 cylinder) devices presented to the host - especially if you also have ECC agents deployed on the same machine.

Mask in a few more gatekeepers, and it should be fine.

Thanks for the response Marc!

Unfortunately, I don't have any ECC agents loaded on this host.

As for the gatekeeper devices, I am a semi-newbie to this so I apologize for asking but I'm not sure I ever mapped any gatekeeper devices to any of my hosts...Is there a best practices option for these? What is the best way to select which ones to use? Are they already configured by default? Just mask and map them?

Thanks...

Gatekeeper devices are used by applications to communicate in-band with the Symmetrix. There's nothing special about them except their small size of ~3MB.

As a rule of thumb, map 3 gatekeepers to hosts which have apps using SYMAPI (eg Solutions Enabler, ResourcePack, ECC, etc). These gatekeepers should be unique to each host.

You can find them in the config by doing "symdev list -cyl" and look for 6 cylinder devices. Find some free ones not assigned to any other host, then just map & mask them.
