AIX Powerpath version 5.3 SP1 Upgrade Procedure??
I have couple of AIX server in my environment, which are running Powerpath Version 5.3.0. SInce this version of the Powerpath uses a lot of CPU resources, so I tried upgrading Powerpath version to 5.3 SP1. But it got failed. I read the Powerpath installation of AIX, and I followed exaclty it said, except the fact I didnt uninstall the old version, but it didnt worked out for me. So if any one help me out, exaclty what I need to do to install Powerpath, or any good procedure that can help me out that would be really wonderfull.
Thank You
Rama

The instructions don't say anything about uninstalling.. Search for "service pack" in the PowerPath install guide.. Please take a look there.. Also, difficult to troubleshoot without an error... But, anytime you are trying to uninstall, sometimes there is a process which could have a device held, vg still online, etc.... That too is in the guide. In rare cases, may be some unidentfied process.. Had a situation where there was a Legato process that had its hooks in things..

Well, the only knowledge I know about the Servers are that they are AIX server, and I am really sorry I dont remember the exact error. But I can explain you what I did. I unzip the Powerpath package and started installing. It showed EMC Powerpath installation and some other lines and then gave an error and didnt do any thing.
I read on some blogs that we need to uninstall the old powerpath first and then do the upgrade. But if thats correct, can any one let me know, what exaclty I need to do before I uninstall the Powerpath 5.3 and after than we I install the new Powerpath 5.3 SP1 what I need to do that.
Thank You

Hello Rama,
Knowledgebase article emc93300 might also be a help if the ODM is in an unknown state.
But yes, I would follow the uninstall/re-install guide (available on powerlink from the menu options Support -> Tech Doc and adviseries -> Software (P))
Also the powerpath release notes will tell you the OS requirements for PP 5.3
Hope this helps

Hello,
I came accross an issue today when installing PP 5.3 SP1 on an Aix server that previously had PP installed, and using the same directory for installation.
Unusual, but may have been your issue the knowledgebase article is emc231792
Error message seen is:
Method error (/etc/methods/cfgpower -l powerpath0 ):
0514-040 Error initializing a device into the kernel.
Unexpected error occured.
How to verify if this is your issue and the fix is listed in the article.
Hope this helps,
