Modular Disk Storage Hardware Provider service issue

I have a pair of PowerEdge R720 servers powering a Windows 2012 cluster serving as Hyper-V hosts. On both servers in the Event Viewer I'm seeing the follow error in the Application Log about 4 times a day. Faulting application name: SMPROV~1.EXE, version: 10.84.26.2, time stamp: 0x50405699 Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.2.9200.16579, time stamp: 0x51637f77 Exception code: 0xc0000374 Fault offset: 0x00000000000ebd59 Faulting process id: 0x1c3c Faulting application start time: 0x01cf463bc6bf9616 Faulting application path: C:\PROGRA~2\Dell\MDSTOR~1\VDS_VSS\provider\SMPROV~1.EXE Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll Report Id: 2abad31e-b234-11e3-942a-ee73f987bd6c Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID: Things seem to be working okay but I'm concerned that I'm missing something. At the least, it doesn't seem to me that I should be seeing so many instances of this error. Anyone have an idea what's going on and what to do? Or should I open a Dell support case? Jonathan

Hello SmallBizAdmin,

I reviewed the logs that you uploaded and all looks good with your MD3000 with the exception that the unit is a little out of firmware. The version that you are running is 07.35.31.60 & the latest is 07.35.39.64. The error message is an informational message that is normally resolved by doing a firmware upgrade of your controllers. Here is a link to the firmware http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/powervault-md3000?driverId=R315163&osCode=WNET&fileId=2731121563&languageCode=en&categoryId=SF

If this is the first time that you will be doing a firmware upgrade here is how we recommend that you do it:

Steps to update the firmware:

1.         Ensure you have a tested backup of the data contained on the array

2.         It is highly recommended to gather support bundle from the "Support" tab of the MD Storage Manager before performing any firmware upgrade operations. Also recommend getting another support bundle after the upgrade is complete.

3.         You must stop all I/O going to the array

4.         Load MDSM to verify connectivity, then close MDSM but leave the main management screen open

5.         From the main management screen in MDSM use the “upgrade raid controller firmware” on the “devices” screen to upgrade to the latest firmware

6.         Verify connectivity through MDSM

7.         Update the hard drive firmware if applicable

8.         Reboot the stack

a.         Power down the server(s)

b.         Power down the MD3000(i)

c.         Power down any attached storage (MD1000/12xx)

d.         Leave the power off for 2-3 minutes

e.         Power up in reverse order

9.         Verify connection to the array and virtual disks and verify that data is presented to each of the connected servers

This update process will take 60-90 minutes but will vary depending on how long the reboots take to complete.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello SmallBizAdmin,

The error that you have listed is pointing to an MD storage arrays. I am not sure which MD that you have as you didn’t list it in your original post. The first thing that I would do is to see which MD that you have connected to servers, I am just guessing that since you have your servers in a cluster that you might have an MD3200i or MD36xx. If you do have an one of those then you can pull a support bundle from MDSM (Modular Disk Storage Manger) & I can review it for you. If you happen to have one of our MD1200 then you will need to run a dset from the server that produced the error so that we can look at the logs to see what is going on with the MD & the server. you can call dell and create a support case as well, & if so then I would gather the logs as they will ask you to do so as well.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

You're correct that this is an MD storage array involved. It's an MD3000. I tried to upload the zip of the support bundle but it wouldn't upload so I'm not sure how to get that to you.

The file has been uploaded. If it's not what you're looking for, you'll have to tell me how to produce the report you're wanting.

Thanks for your help. Your directions are what we'll use when we do the upgrade. Thanks for taking the time to figure this out and reply! Jonathan
