Hello there and welcome to the discussion. Its a hectic VMWorld, and a first experience for me. The bar was raised by nature itslef when the Earthquake struck in the wee hours of Sunday morning. We're all safe. and the conference is in full swing.

One thing that Roberto and I were involved in on the Sunday was the #v0dgeball 2014 tournament. Its a fun tournament and held in aid of the charity Wounded Warrior.  You can see all the fun and photos here: https://twitter.com/hashtag/v0dgeball?mode=photos

Roberto kindly donated his time to be a referee, while I played with the EMC Elect team. "The Electrocutioneers". We got knocked out on our first game

Now today there was plenty of announcements. It'd be hard for me to summarize them all but luckily there is a place to see it all. And its here: VMworld.com: VMworld Bloggers Some great content to move through.

And we even had our own breaking news when we opened nominations for the EMC Elect of 2015 opening today. You can read about that here: Nominations are open for EMC Elect 2015!

If you are not attending the conference and do have a question about whats happening here, please ask. If I don't know that answer I will endeavor to find someone here who can and will.

Also be sure to stop by the Everything VMware At EMCCommunity to see what else is happening from the EMC perspective.

I look forward to your questions.

Hello Experts,

Good to see you got some time for the rest of us from escaping your busy schedule. I just want to know what UCS is all about ? Are we not going to use Storage Systems in coming years ? I attended your recent seminar within Pune, India, which gave me a number of insights about EMC, VMware World & their partners of course.

Thanks

Rakesh

So its Tuesday though I feel like it really should be Wednesday. In any event the biggest thing from an EMC perspective was the surprise announcement of Recoverpoint for virtual machines. We did a live tweet chat on #EMCATE about it which was busy and had some great information being shared there: http://tweetchat.com/room/EMCATE

That conversation continues on the community as another Ask the Expert session:

Ask the Expert: EMC RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines: Simple, Efficient, Proven Data Protection for VMware

If you want to know more about that, ask your questions there.

I have noted I may need to talk to a Cisco Expert for Rakesh. But if anyone else has any questions you'd like me to ask, just pop in a reply to this thread with your question.

Hi Rakesh and thanks for chiming in. You ask a rather large and encompassing question. And I think most experts would want to avoid forward looking statements. In jest we at EMC could say Hardware for What ?

Chad Sakac's blogs shares an interesting fun video EMC made recently. http://virtualgeek.typepad.com/virtual_geek/2014/08/vmworld-2014-hardware-for-what.html

And I will confess UCS is really not my forte, but there are plenty of Cisco people I can ask about it. But maybe if you gave me more context and more specific's around what you are trying to find out about UCS might help me get the best answer for you.

At the very least we have this to give the most simplified description of UCS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cisco_Unified_Computing_System

Thanks a lot Mark, would really appreciate your efforts for this. What expert briefed about it (during EMC, Cisco & VMware roadshow) that includes everything, though I have never used it. I was just curious about what will happen to Storage then...(in coming years) may be it doesn't make any sense to ask such questions.

Thanks

Rakesh

Hey Rakesh,

There is no such thing as a senseless question

I am sure there are many opinions on the future of storage but they are all forward looking and have to come with that caveat. I think we will always and ever have Enterprise storage, but perhaps less and less traditional Datacenter stuff as it exists today. But it won't happen quite overnight, but may be quick enough to change the game on some level. Again this is my own thoughts, but even I can't claim to see the future.

I will have a chat with some Cisco folk and see what they recommend for the best understanding of UCS. I will bet they have their own support community on it. I will get specifics on it in due course.
