Welcome to the EMC Support Community Ask the Expert conversation. On this occasion we will be covering Best practices when integrating Avamar 7.0 with Data Domain. Avamar and Data Domain system integration enables: Data Domain system to be backup Targets for Avamar Backups. One or more Data domain systems to be managed by Avamar. Transparent user interaction to the backup target (Avamar or Data Domain). The target destination of backup data, which is set by a backup policy at the dataset. Level and Avamar clients to use the EMC Data Domain Boost software option to use Data Domain systems as backup targets
When integrating an Avamar with a Data Domain system you will need to understand what preparations need to address before integration can take place.

Jeff,
Besides reading the manuals (which are pretty good), what have you seen in the field that users should be vigilant about when getting ready to implement Avamar/DD solution ? What questions should they ask ?

Hello All ways review the Avamar 7.0 Operational Best Practice guide. These are a few of the issue that I have seen. Make sure you review your configuration. When you configure Avamar to use a Data Domain system that third-party applications also use, carefully evaluate the amount of storage you need for Avamar data. Ensure that enough storage is available for both Avamar data and the third-party applications. Make sure you have your scheduled backups staggered. Review the boost recommendations. Ensure that he DDBoost has the correct privileges. Assign fully qualified domain names (FQDN) to the Data Domain system before you add it to an Avamar configuration. Understand your space requirements. .

Insure that the clients that are being used are fully support. Review the Avamar and Data Domain release notes before starting the implementation. Does this version of DDOS support what I want to do? Verify the correct number of network drops for the systems. I have seen where the customer has not taken into account redundancy. What license do you need. Do you need encryption? Have the new license been added? Identify how long you wish to retain the backups. This is a key question when deciding how large a system needs to be. Remember that the Avamar does garbage collection daily but the Data Domain only cleans once a week. Did you configure the NTP properly on the Amara and Data Domain? Did you create the DDBoost account?

In the Introduction to Avamar containers for storage Within the GSAN, there are two primary types of containers for storing data: metadata
containers and data containers.
◆ Metadata containers store the metadata for backups.
◆ Data containers store the actual backup data.
I have two concerns below for long and would need a practical and honest opinion in line with DELLEMC Best Practice:
-How is the Metadata containers that store the metadata for backups backup taken and protected?
-How is the Metadata containers that store the metadata for backups protected or replicated offsite or to a DR site?
