Disk replace process for Dell EMC ME4 series

Recently, my customer has bought a DELL EMC ME 4024 storage and they would like to clarify some query regarding the disk replacement process.

I have gotten the process from Dell website link below and would like to clarify some steps in the process.

https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-sg/powervault-me4024/me4_series_ag_pub/about-reconstruction?guid=guid-08a18fd7-f122-44c5-9855-3b5f1e122b64&lang=en-us

Below is the extract from the link above.

The following steps describe the drive failure process that occurs when a drive fails in a disk group:

  1. A drive fails.
  2. An available compatible spare drive joins the disk group.
  3. Reconstruction starts and the disk group status is VRSC/RCON.
  4. The failed drive replaced by a new drive.
  5. A copyback operation from the spare drive to the new drive begins. The status of the disk group is CPYBK.
  6. When the copyback operation completes, the original spare drive exits the disk group and it becomes a spare drive again.

Qns:

  1. For step 3., is it required to wait for the reconstruction to complete before replacing the failed disk?
  2. For step 6., does the spare disk exit automatically?

The following steps describe the drive failure process that occurs when a drive goes missing from a slot:

  1. A drive goes missing from a slot.
  2. An available compatible spare drive joins the disk group.
  3. Reconstruction starts and the disk group status is VRSC/RCON.
  4. The missing drive is placed back in its slot or the missing drive is detected and shows up.
  5. The status of the drive is LEFTOVER.
  6. Metadata of the LEFTOVER drive is cleared and the drive joins the disk group.
  7. A copyback operation from the spare drive to the drive that joined the disk group begins. The status of the disk group is CPYBK.
  8. When the copyback operation completes, the original spare drive exits the disk group and it becomes a spare drive again.

Qns:

  1. For step 3., is it required to wait for the reconstruction to complete before replacing the failed disk?
  2. For step 6., is it required to manually clear the metadata before step 7 will happen?
  3. For step 8., does the spare disk exit automatically?
