XPS 8500 RAM UPGRADE
My XPS 8500 came with 4 x 2gb ram [8gb total] I wanted to upgrade and saw a great deal on 2 x 8 gb modules.
When it arrives, should I remove the 4x 2gb and replace with the 2 x 8gb, or can I leave 2 of them in place giving me 20gb in total?
Assuming the answer is yes, is there any order I should install the new ram, ie slots 1 and 2, or does it not matter? Also I am running windows 8, do I need to tell it to use more ram?
thanks s for any help with this.

According to the spec sheet for the XPS 8500, the supported RAM configs are: 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 32 GB.
Assuming that's correct, you'll have to remove all four 2-GB modules and install only the two new 8-GB modules for a total of 16 GB. The 2x8 GB modules should be installed in motherboard slots 1 and 2.
And according to the Owners Manual, slot 1 is SECOND from the CPU and slot 2 is FORTH from CPU, and their retention chips should be the same color.
Assuming BIOS recognizes the new RAM, Windows should know how to use it.

hey I was wondering if the new ram worked and, if so, what brand was it?
I'm looking to upgrade myself.

Have you looked at crucial.com? If they recommend RAM for a specific model, they'll take it back if it doesn't work.

lol, thanks for the site but for future reference no one should give that company business.
I just went there to make an online order and they tried to charge me sales tax. They said it was a federal law. When I asked them to prove it they said they are just going by what they are told. They are wrongfully charging people sales tax.

They're not cheating you. Most likely your state and Crucial came to an agreement on collecting sales tax, just like Amazon agreed to collect sales tax on orders shipped to some states, and/or because Crucial has a physical presence in your state.
Here's the list of states where Crucial is required to collect sales tax (aka: "user fees" in some states). By my count, they collect sales tax in 70% of the states.
Obviously, you're free to spend your money wherever you want, but I don't think you can make blanket statements about where others should/shouldn't do business on the basis of your comments.

They do have to charge me sales tax but is my fault expecting the employees to know why even though it is not very complicated.
It is because they are owned by Micron who has a presence in my nexus. No other reason.
Either way, thanks for the help and link to their site! Found same ram cheaper elsewhere after they lost my business.
