XPS 400 Supports Windows 8 Install?
Hello,
I have a Dell XPS 400 with a Pentium D 820 Dual Core 2.8 GHz. Bought this in 2006 and upgraded to 2GB RAM. Does this configuration supports installing Windows 8? Any major issues?

It works but it is NOT supported for windows 8.
If your CPU does not have Execute Disable Bit Security option in bios it will not install.
Not all processors have this feature.
All Pentium D Models seem to have the NX bit.
So the latest bios would be recommended BEFORE the upgrade.
VISTA will have issues before SP2
SP1 is required before SP2
Full install of SP1 and SP2 is recommended.

I was able to get Windows 8.0 Pro with Media Center (64 bit) to install on my Dell XPS 400 (with 2.8GHz Pentium D processor and A07 BIOS), but I was unable to perform the Windows 8.1 upgrade. The 8.1 upgrade failed due to CPU limitations, i.e., the CPU did not support at least one of the required CPU functions, PAE, NX, SSE2 plus LAHF-SAHF, CX16 and PREFETCHW. As I understand it, the Pentium D does not support PREFETCHW, so the 8.1 upgrade is a non-starter. The only way around this issue is to go back to 32 bit Win 8 Pro.Then the upgrade to Win 8.1 Pro (32 bit) is supposed to work. I am not willing to go through all of these machinations, so I am sticking with Win 8 Pro 64 bit.

Hi Udayansh,
You should run the compatibility check available on the Microsoft support website.

Thanks. I did run it and it seems supported. However wanted to check for any official word from Dell.
The only things I can't have is Secure Boot for root kits etc.

Thank you SpeedStep. I have no intention of going to Vista but it is still very useful information.

In place upgrade requires AT LEAST VISTA SP1. Otherwise the WIN8 upgrade is a Scorched earth install.
There are no WIN8 Drivers and never will be which means you may need to install drivers in VISTA SP2 compatability mode.
There are no 32 bit to 64 bit upgrades of any kind any version.
You can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro and keep Windows settings, personal files, and applications from the following Windows operating system editions:
