Using Virtual PC and XP mode on new 64bit desktop pc.

Just purchased new 64 bit desktop with Windows 7 os and need to run older 32 bit applications.

Have found help files and discussions about installing Win Virtual PC and XP mode to run these apps.

Would like to verify Virtual PC and XP mode will run on this machine and confirm installation process.

Any help would be appreciated.

Directions for install that I found.

Install Windows6.1-KB958559-x64

Restart pc

Install WindowsXPMode_en-us

Desktop specs

Inspiron 3650

I7-6700 Processor (8M cache, 4 GHz)

16GB & 2 TB hd

Have you tried running them in Compatibility Mode for Win XP, rather than messing with Virtual PC?

Don't know how you plan to load those apps (eg from CD/DVD or download), but find the installer.exe or setup.exe (whatever it's named) for the app and right-click its filename or icon. Select Properties and then click Compatibility tab. Set it to Win XP and then run the installer.

After it installs, you may have to right-click the icon for the actual app itself and set its Compatibility Mode to XP too.

And remove your Service Tag from your post ASAP. You should treat the Service Tag as confidential and never post it in an open forum like this.

What error message do you get?

If the installer is 16-bit, even if the actual app is 32-bit, you won't be able to run the installer so that might be the limitation here.

Can you find a newer version with a 32-bit installer?

Our development team uses Oracle VirtualBox. It's free, but you need licenses for the operating systems you install in the VMs.

Oracle VM VirtualBox runs across Windows, Mac OSX, Linux and Solaris allowing users to run multiple different guest operating systems.
