Upgrade Power Supply - Problem with OptiPlex 980

Hello Dell Community,

I have some technical difficulties with upgrading (replacing) my current original Dell power supply (305W). So far the Dell Service Hotline could not help me out, so I hope I can find some answers here.

I bought a new graphics card for my Dell OptiPlex 980 (model: Early 2010) which requires at least a 500w PSU, so I went out and bought a new power supply just to find out that the 20 pin ATX does not fit on the socket of my Dell motherboard. I already read online that Dell uses a proprietary 24 pin connector, is that true?

How can I correctly connect the new PSU to my dell PC and motherboard? Does Dell provide >500W PSUs - I could not find any online? Do I need an adapter? Or do I have to do it by hand??

The pictures show the socket on my motherboard and the comparison of the Dell connector (top) and ATX connector of new PSU (bottom).

Looking forward to your answers!! Thanks a lot in advance!

Christian

The Optiplex 980 motherboard supports a P1 Mini 24-pin connector, not the standard 24-pin ATX connector.

You will need to buy a standard ATX 24-pin adaptor to a Mini 24-pin adaptor.

Thank you for your quick reply.

Are you sure that works out? Because the colors of the cable look somehow different to the ones I have in my PSU...

Unfortunately, I am in Germany and amazon does not ship the article to my address. Do you know of any other manufacturers?

Thanks!!!

Yes, it should work fine, adaptor cable colour coding is often different.

I revised the links I posted, there is one from eBay, to locate the adaptor try using Google.
