SD Card Reader

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help.

I recently had to reinstall Windows 7 on my XPS 8100 after a crash, since doing so I cannot read SD cards plugged into the card reader using Windows Explorer.

If I plug a card in it appears in the list of devices with removable storage but if I click on it Explorer pops up a message box saying - "Please insert a disk into SD/mini-MMC/RS (F:)"

I have checked and the card reader is showing up in Device Manager, and selecting properties it says the device is working properly.

Also if I right-click 'My Computer' and select 'Manage' and then 'Disk Management' the plugged in SD card shows as Disk 2 Removable 3.69 GB Online and the box to the right shows a blue line at the top and the following -
(F:)
3.69 GB RAW
Healthy (Primary Partition)

So from all of the above I assume that the drivers are loaded OK but for some reason Explorer does not see the card.

I can read the cards fine when they are plugged into a Sandisk USB Card Reader so all is not lost, but it would be good to get the installed card reader working again.

Any ideas/suggestions gratefully accepted.

Thanks,
Ashley

Try downloading and installing THIS DRIVER. Note: Do not use the download manger option. use the option to download via your web browser

Thanks Dave that has worked like a dream. :-)

I had installed the one off the drivers CD when I did the reinstall of Windows, but that appeared not to work. I had also used Windows to check for an updated driver but it reported the one I was using was the latest.

Anyway I installed the one you linked to and Explorer now sees the contents of the SD card in the card slot.

Thanks again.

Unfortunately I am back revisiting this issue.

I had given up and was using a plug-in USB card reader to access my SD cards, but I now need to read an XD card for which I have no external reader.

The driver suggested by Dave above worked for a couple of days and then the system went back to not recognising a card plugged into the reader.

Device manager reports the drives as being there and working correctly. I can see the drives in the 'Devices with Removable Storage section' in Explorer and right clicking and selecting properties indicates all is well. When I plug a card into the reader the icon changes colour to indicate the presence of a card but clicking on the icon gives the message - Please insert a disk into SD/mini-MMC/RS (F:)

So whilst Windows seems to know that the reader is there, and that a card has been plugged in, it cannot read the card.

This applies to all cards and they all work fine in the plug-in reader.

Any ideas?

I bought an empty XPS 7100 case on eBay and installed an aftermarket Asus mainboard. The stock Dell card reader works perfectly, attached to a standard USB header, with standard Windows 7 drivers.

I'm thinking your card reader is damaged. In that case, replacements can be had on eBay for nominal sums.

If you haven't already done so. Shut the computer down and unplug the power cord. Let it set for a couple minutes. plug it back in and start the computer up and see if you still have the problem. I had read several other people having the problem with the card reader on Dell computers so when it happened to mine that's how I fixed it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

@rdunnill - I don't think it's a hardware problem as the card reader was working fine right up to the time I needed to re-install Windows, seems more like a software problem to me.

@lynne - I'll give it a try, thanks.

These solutions also worked for me, today, Dec 29, 2012.  I installed the suggested FoxConn drivers, and then uplugged the PC for about five minutes.  After a reboot, the SD card reader worked again.  Thanks!
