Question regarding inspiron 546 cpu cooling.

i have on order a dell inspiron 546 to replace my old trusy dimension 4600 and from the pictures here at dell's site is seems the inspiron 546 no longer has a "cooling shroud" but use a traditional cpu hsf and exhaust fan. can any i546 owners confirm? fyi i ordered my i546 with the phenom x4 9750. thanks to all who can help.

There is both a chassis fan and a cooling fan attached to the processor's heatsink.

thanks for that. i was used to my 4600's good old green duct cpu fan combo. that answers my question.

You are welcome.

I have a 530 Mini Tower that has the same chassis and fans, as the 546 and never had any problems with it's cooling even on 100*+ days.

thanks for that. i was used to my 4600's good old green duct cpu fan combo. that answers my question.

At least some of the newer Dells use standard Intel heatsinks, fastened down with screws instead of push-pins.

I use a third-party Rosewill heatsink with my 540s, fastened down with screws from the Thermalright Bolt-Thru kit.

if you mean a fan, yes the power supply also has a fan.

I have an i546 with the AMD Quad 630, and it uses a traditional HSF (no shroud).  Personally, I prefer no shroud, as it allows the HSF to access th efull volume of air in the case.

It's a matter of physics. A shroud directs 100% of the air directly over the heat sink and has nothing to do with accessing free flowing air in the case. That was the purpose of the shroud. The surrounding air, no matter how much is passing by, is forced into the cpu area at a high speed. Passing ambient air merely blows on one side of the cpu and HS without a shroud and with less velocity.
