Optiplex GX280 soundmax integrated digital audio failed, driver issue?
I have an Optiplex GX280 with soundmax integrated digital audio on Windows 7 SP1. Sound working fine for long time, then nothing. I uninstalled it, rebooted, Windows Update found and installed the same driver. Using known good speakers doesnt work. I tried finding just smwdm.sys, NG. I rechecked the BIOS, integrated audio still enabled. Disabled it then rebooted and re-enabled it. I found a newer driver, 5.12.02.5280, not compatible. About to call it DOA and order a PCI card, figured I'd give it a shot in the forum. Appreciate the help.
DirectX 11 diag:
no problems found
provider: Analog Devices
name :smwdm.sys
version: 5.12.1.7010
Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS version 1.10 A08
pentium r 4 cpu 3.2 ghz

Dell DOES NOT support Vista/Win 7 on this model. XP is latest OS. The XP drivers are incompatible. Windows must have installed a generic "HD Audio Codec" driver that gave you sound.
Not sure what drivers you are finding, but as there is no "official" driver, I don't know what to tell you.

Thank you for the quick reply. Please read my post - Sound working fine for long time, then nothing. Using 7 on this machine for 1.5 years, Vista before that for I dont remember how long. Windows Update found and installed the same driver - before it quit it was using the driver noted at the bottom of my post - 5.12.1.7010, the same one Windows Update found and installed today.

Please excuse me for saying so but that is a robotic, automatic answer. I didnt post this in any of the many other hardware forums and came straight to this forum because I thought it was the definitive source for anything Dell. Apparently I was wrong about that.

There is no call to be terse. Analog Devices has changed hands several times.
I think Rockwell Conexant owns them now.
There aren't any WDDM 1.1 Drivers but Windows Vista WDDM 1.0 Drivers are available.
Analog Devices passes SoundMAX torch to Conexant
When Analog Devices said it would stop developing PC audio codecs this summer, we expected the move to empower other audio codec providers. That's exactly what's happened, but not quite in the way one would have thought: Conexant agreed to "manufacture, distribute, and support ADI's PC audio codec product line."
12/10/08
The deal applies to SoundMAX audio solutions for desktop and notebook PCs, which will now complement Conexant's audio offerings. ADI tells us passing the torch to Conexant is the best way to keep serving its customers, and it expects Conexant to "continue the level of support that is necessary and further develop features required by the PC industry."
As part of the agreement, ADI's PC audio engineering support team has also joined Conexant's ranks. The team will be part of the rival firm's Imaging and PC Media group, and it will operate out of Conexant's Waltham, Massachusetts location. At least for now, the move may preserve the current level of diversity in the PC audio codec arena, since SoundMAX should keep coexisting with other solutions from Conexant, Realtek, and others.

SpeedStep I bow to your awesomeness That did it. The installer said the the driver was the same, uninstalled it and the reinstalled the the same driver, 5.12.1.7010, 10/31/2006. It works now. Fabulous, thanks.`
I may still get a 5.1 channel card. The machine has a 2 slot PCI riser. The cage looks pretty crampt, is there a spec for cards that will fit?
Thanks

Any pci cards that work will REQUIRE PCI 2.2 or 2.3. Meaning the card has 2 KEYWAYS in the slot.
Cards with only 1 Keyway are PCI 2.1 and 5v Only and WILL NOT EVER WORK.

Those drivers worked for me but there was an extra step involved to get the Soundmax driver to install to my system, then Microsoft update found the right driver and VWALA, works great!
I have a XFX graphics card with HDMI on it and the system thought that that was my default, because I left the XFX card in while I installed Win7x64 everything installed perfect. Then I look and see that I have no audio except HDMI out from XFX card. I downloaded and tryed to install above said drivers, but it say that it was wrong driver cause I had AMD High Def Audio. Driver kicked back. So I go in and disable AMD HD AD in sound/video controllers and presto winupdate finds legacy driver probably from MS Vista x64 and it works great (The down arrow means it disabled not uninstalled).
Oh BTW I have GX280 Desk Top (DCNE) Win7x64, ATI Radeon HD 4550, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 450W Matx PSU (non-Dell), P4 551 CPU 3.2GHz [going to install P4 570 or 571 (self install)], Dell A08 Bios.
