Q6700 .. core 2 quad.... ram is dependant on modle of the 755 you have.. if you got 2 or 4 ram slots... .. if 2 slots it can handle 2X2 gb (4 total) either 667mhz or 800 MHz if 4 slots can handle 4X 2 gb of same.. 8 gig total.. the link shows everything anyway

Maximum RAM will depend on the form factor (i.e. Minitower has 4 DIMM slots - Ultra Small Form Factor has 2 DIMM slots). Officially, (according to the Dell Technical Guide Book for the Optiplex GX 755) the max CPU and RAM are:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 Processor (2.66GHz, 8MB L2 cache, 1066MHz FSB, VT)
8GB of DDR2-800 (PC6400) non-ECC memory
N652J 3.00GHz Yorkfield Quad Core Q9650, 12MB
F886J 2.83GHz Yorkfield Quad Core Q9550 12MB, 1333FSB, E0
N650J 2.66GHz Yorkfield Quad Core Q9400, 6MB, 1333FSB, R0
Those 3 above were validated by Dell engineers, and below the rest of general processors from another list.
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 Processor (2.66GHz, 8MB L2 cache, 1066MHz FSB, VT)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor (2.4GHz, 8MB L2 cache, 1066MHz FSB, VT)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 Processor (3.0GHz, 4MB L2 cache, 1333MHz FSB, vPro, VT)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Processor (2.66GHz, 4MB L2 cache, 1333MHz FSB, vPro, VT)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 Processor (2.33GHz, 4MB L2 cache, 1333MHz FSB, vPro, VT)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 Processor (2.4GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 Processor (2.2GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 Processor (2.0GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 Processor (2.0GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 Processor (1.8GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 Processor (1.6GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Celeron 440 Processor (2.0GHz, 512K L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel Celeron 430 Processor (2.0GHz, 512K L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
The easiest way to find your motherboard and chipset info - get CPUZ, it will tell you all you need to know.
Now, the above list would work, if you look elsewhere, you might find that more CPU should be supported - don't go this way, Dell BIOS would not support extra choices.
I think you have enough Quads offers to beat you Core2 Duo.
BIOS must be Updated BEFORE trying a CPU. Not all models are supported.
Now a little bit about the memory.
This is the guaranteed to work - Dell validated 8GB of DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) and DDR2-800 (PC6400) non-ECC memory. DDR2-1066Mhz PC2-8500/8600 is not supported.
What form factor you have MT, DT or SFF types? If it MT (Mini Tower) - PC2 8500 is supported.

Dear OptiPlexed,
Very thorough, thank you for such a good post. These types of posts are solid gold!
Sorry to do this, but may I revitalize this thread, I have three more questions:
1. The three Yorkfield/Q6... processors, will they need special cooling?
2. Would there be adequate wattage with the stock PSU?
3. With the new processor from "1." would there be enough wattage to also run one of the suggest graphics cards? (ie. ATI hd2400?, x1300)?
In this oem setting is it even more strict to add up the wattage (processor, graphics, RAM, HD, etc) keeping it below the PSU?
Thank you for all of your assistance a head of time!
Grateful,
LIOTB
