Keep Getting S.M.A.R.T. Error Message On Boot Up With NFW [Nothing Found Wrong]

I continue to get stopped in the middle of a start up and or a reboot on my Inspiron 530 with the:

NOTICE - Hard Drive SELF MONITORING SYSTEM has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range.
Dell recommends that you back up your data regularly. A parameter out of range may or may not indicate a potential hard drive problem.
— S.M.A.R.T error, possible HDD failure. This feature can be enabled or disabled in BIOS setup.
Press F1 to Continue or Press F2 to enter the BIOS Setup...

I have had a momentary power outage from time to time with my house power but have never received this error message before.
I've run 3 different hard drive utilities for determining a S.M.A.R.T. error and fail to find anything wrong, if fact they give my drive a 97 to 98% overall health rating.
I find that in most forums around the net that the opinion more often than not is that is no reset or disablement in the BIOS setup settings.
I'm interested to know if I actually have to live with this error problem for the rest of this computer life,
after all, why does it give the 'Press F2 to enter BIOS setup' option?

Back up your personal files on external media asap and then go buy a new hard drive.

Hi,

The SMART error doesn’t clearly specify what the issue with the system is. To diagnose the issue I would suggest you to run the hardware diagnostics.

Please follow the steps below:

1. Insert the Resource CD that you received with the system.
2. Ensure that no external peripherals like printers are connected.
3. Once you restart the system keep tapping F12 key and select CD/DVD Rom and start tapping Enter key.
4. Select 32 bit diagnostics and run the Extended Test which performs a thorough check of devices. This test typically takes an hour or more and requires you to answer questions periodically

Check for any error codes and reply to us.

Thanks and Regards

Reboot and press F2 to open BIOS setup. Copy down all the current settings. Then try clearing BIOS:

Power off, unplug

Press/hold power button for ~15 sec

Open case and remove motherboard battery*

Press/hold power button for ~30 sec

Reinstall the battery (right-side-up!)

*If battery is more than ~2-3 years old, this might be a good time to replace it.

Assuming you don't get the SMART error message when you reboot, go into BIOS setup and confirm all settings match what you wrote down. Be sure to save any changes before exiting setup.

It's possible this was a one-time SMART error, and that's why your other diagnostics don't report problems. Clearing BIOS might clear the error message.

If it were my system, I'd be backing up all files on external media on regular basis in case this was the first warning of an impending drive failure.

Hello Priyanka,

By 'Resource CD', do you mean the DELL Windows XP Pro CD? I just want to make sure as I no longer have any other Dell 'Drivers' utility CD because what came with this 530 was Vista along with too much wrong for me so I opted to format and install XP Pro SP3 32 back in 2008.

Hi,

Yes you have to use the Dell Resource CD (Drivers & Utilities) to run the hardware diagnostics.

Please reply.

Thanks and Regards

For Priyanka S,

I have run my Dell Resource CD [DRIVERS AND UTILITIES P/N XN342 Rev. A08 August 2008]  3 or more times for most of the tests concerning Memory and Hard Drive but failed in each trial to understand how to save and share the results data. Help did not help at all. It would seem to me to be first and foremost for a diagnostic utility program or application such as this to be able to save the results to a file or log or something so I could show it to you and somebody that knows what it means but... hard as I looked, there were no parameter settings to choose from with this, my Utility Disk. I think the results file was only a Temp. and when you alt. F4 to exit, you then begin to finish the Reboot you originally started to boot from the Utility Disk and all the results data is then of course lost. I tried several ways to search a log file by date and time but found nothing.

So, I started to try and find out how to save my diagnostic results data and the search around the Dell community turned up a lot of people and so many links with the same endeavour... and then there was this guy that said "You set up a digital camera on a tripod and make your screen shots so you can share with the Dell Technicians... and then he signed 'smiley tongue'.

So, that's what I've been doing--

1st image is the Memory Test results which even states at the bottom "Record the test results. Press a key when finished." It is still unclear how anybody could possibly record the test results? Oh well.

Then started with the Symptom Tree > Hard Drive--

and came up with the following errors--

0F00: 133E

0F00: 063E

0F00: 013E

0F00: 073E

0F00: 043E

0F00: 123E

0F00: 0D3E

0F00: 1A3E ... so when finished it looked like this--

I guess it doesn't look so good but maybe you can tell me how to save a result report so I can share with you.

Thank you,

jondan7

You're welcome. Let's  hope the new hard drive puts an end to your problems!

One of the other forum volunteers has written a really great series of Wikis for reinstalling Windows on Dell PCs, so go here and pick the one specific for your OS and follow it carefully and you shouldn't have problems reinstalling.
