JPEG File interchange Format changed to JPEG Filter
In Microsoft Photo Editor 3.01, in the drop down lists of Save as file types, the JPEG option has changed from saying "JPEG File Interchange Format" to "JPEG Filter." I have no clue why. I didn't change anything. It still saves and loads jpegs, but it is annoying that it is this way with no known cause to me and I think it might affect how files are saved and their file sizes. I checked the Microsoft Knowledge Base and found nothing that applied. All other file types are there normally (I think). If someone who has Photo Editor posts a response, can he or she give me a list of file type options in the save as dialogue box, so I can compare it to mine? Also, does anyone know what CD the program comes from?

Hi,
First of all, Microsoft Photo Editor installs as one of the Office Tools component in Word or in Office, depending on your installation. It isn't part of the typical installation, but is an additional component you choose to install at setup.
Next, the file formats my install currently supports are:
*.gif
*.bmp
*.jpg JPEG File Interchange Format
*.tif
*.png
*.pcx
*.tga
Hope this helps,
Kay

Hi,
I believe you should be fine on your Office install, since you did not allow this install to overwrite that one. The problem there might--and this is an unknown, but might have involved dueling Product ID numbers. I just don't know about that issue, having not faced it myself.
I wasn't clear on your statement as to the JPEG File Interchange Format situation: you did install the Office Tools component, so that you got a fresh install of Microsoft Photo Editor, and now have the standard .jpg save option? If not, I think that by digging way deep into Add/Remove Word that you can work with just the Office Tools component. This migh also be able to be done through Word Setup. If you'd like to pursue this, with Word open, go to Word Help, choose Contents/Index, and your search term will be Word Setup, or just setup. Under Word setup, you will want to read the Location of Components article. If it is changing back to the filter form, I would try to uninstall the just the component, restart the system to clear the remaining traces from memory, then reinstall just the component, using Word Setup.
If it's all fixed for you, howver, then enjoy it :),
