Inspiron 660 Does Not Power On

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help me diagnose and self-repair the following problem. I have been traveling for the last six weeks and just returned home to find that my Inspiron 660 Desktop will not power on. It seems to be completely dead. The PC was definitely shut down before I left and no one has touched it since, so I'm not sure what has happened.

I tried to follow the troubleshooting steps listed here but nothing helps solve the problem:

  • Try a different wall outlet, and power it on
  • Reseat the power cord which is connected to “Power Supply” of the tower and power the Desktop on
  • SWAP the power cord of the Monitor with the system power cord and power on the Desktop

I have also tried calling DELL support (three times) directly to figure out a solution but they basically read me the above troubleshooting tips after I explain to them that I have already tried this and refuse to provide further information without subscribing to the $159 concierge service.

I purchase the PC late last year and it has only had light usage (checking email and browsing the web for a couple of hours each week). Ofcourse the PC is a few weeks outside of the one-year warranty and hence no one is willing to help me. I've been purchasing several DELL products over the past few years and have never encountered a problem like this with their products before.

I'm hoping that there is something that I can do to easily repair the PC on my own without incurring much expense since it is only a year old.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Smartkid,

We regret the inconvenience caused to you.

Unplug the power cable. Press and hold power button for 15 seconds. Plugin the power cable and turn on the system.

If there is no light on the power button, let me know if you can see any light at the rear end of the system.

I would suggest you to remove internal components(Optical drive, Hard drive, memory) one by one to isolate the issue.

NOTE: Computer components are to be removed by a professional only.

Thanks & Regards

Thanks for the response. There is no light in the back on the Green LED. Does this mean something is wrong with the power supply?

I have also disconnected all of the components from the power supply and plugged it in - Still no green light. Is there anyway to further test or fix the power supply?

Are there any 'Beeps', is the power button LED lite, if so, what is the colour and is it blinking, or solid?

If you are comfortable working around computers, try the following:

Note: The only 100% method of testing a PSU, is to install a known working power supply.

Unplug the cord from the power supply, hold the power button in for about 15/20 seconds, open the case, unplug the 24-pin power connector from the motherboard and jump the Green wire to one of the Black wires, reconnect the power cord and power the system, if power supply's fan and the hard drive run, then the PSU should be good.

Note: Do not remove any wires from the plug, use a small piece of wire or a paper clip as a jumper.

Power supply checks out, again disconnect the power cord, hold the power button in for several seconds to discharge the residue power, reconnect the 24-pin connector to the motherboard.

Remove all PCI cards from the system, take out the video card [if applicable], disconnect all peripherals, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard and disconnect the power & data cables from all drives.

Reconnect the power cord and power system on, see if you get a different LED indication on the power button, or 'Beeps'.

No difference, remove the memory from the system and try again.

Still shows no signs of life then you are looking at a motherboard replacement & maybe a processor.

Note: The processor rarely fails and the only method I know of checking a processor, is to install it a compatible working PC, or use a known working processor.

I would like to report that this case is now resolved. It was indeed a dead power supply. I'm still not sure what caused the problem to begin with but with the help of DELL-Manshu on this forum and a Dell technician, I have had the component replaced and now the system is working like new.
