You need to post the computer model and version of windows, so that forum members can help you.

What is the reading of the power button LED, green, blinking green, solid amber, blinking amber?
What is the sequence of the diagnostic Lights on the front panel of the case?

If the 3 & 4 diagnostic lights are lite, this would indicate a memory problem.

Open the case and try reseating the RAM.

If this does not correct the problem, then remove the module/modules and install a module, [one at time] in a DIMM and see if the system boots, if the system starts normally, then install an additional module, if available. System does not start, try using different DIMM's.

System still does not boot, you need to try a module of new compatible RAM.

How to remove and reinstall memory.

Bev.

Hello
Yes its the 3 and 4 steady green light and a buzzing sound. I can re instal the memory I already have?   I am do want to buy somemore memory. I thought when I had my computer made that I had gotten alot of memory but its only 1GB guess that isn't much now a days. so do you think I should buy a total of 2 GB of memory? and should I buy it from Dell?
I want to get my computer back up and running again soon as I can.
I sure hope that my memory is the only problem.

Have you tried installing just one module at a time, in different slots and see if the system boots, after it's installed, as I posted?

1gb of memory, should be fine for XP, but installing 2gb would be better, I recently upgraded my D-8400 from 1gb to 2gb and the Inspiron 530 that runs Vista, to 3gb.

No, you don't have to buy the memory from Dell, an excellent source for memory is Crucial, who has free S&H on orders of $40+ and guaranties their memory to be compatible to your system

See here.

Hello
well I tried taking one memory (module) out ,first the right side that didn't help,so I put back the right side memory(module) took out the left side that didn't help at all.  Same problem still the 3 &4 dignostic lights are on and the hard drive symbol is on plus still have that buzzing sound.   I did notice that it sounds like its booting but like I said before the 3 and 4 lights green are on with  the hard drive light on thats green too.   so what do i do now?
Also I learned by looking at my memory that its says: Samsung 512 MB 1Rx8PC2 have 2 of them.

Hello
I will go try that now. what i did was just take out the memory module out of its spot and put it back in the same spot.  Sorry I am not good at computer stuff yet.

will go downstairs to my dell computer and try this out again

Did you first remove the two memory modules, then install only one module in slot 1 and see if the system boots, does not boot, move the module to slot 2 and again see if the system boots, no boot, try the module in slot 3, no boot, try installing in slot 4?

Still does not boot, then remove the first module and using the second one, repeat the sequence described above.

Still does not boot, buy a new compatible memory module/s.

If then the computer still does not start, it would appear that the motherboard has failed and needs to be replaced.

You can either call Dell Spare Parts for the price, or buy the D-9100 motherboard for $55 from here.

Hello
Weill I found out from dell that my computer is still under warrenty because I bought the 4 year plan.  So to my understanding it will cover the Motherboard.  I am waiting for a computer tech to call me and setup a day for my computer to be fixed.
Anyway thanks for helping me.   :smileyhappy:
