Dell XPS 8500 Restore Points

New Dell XPS 8500 not automatically creating restore points.  I have been doing them manually.  System Restore is listed in task scheduler and enabled.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ace H,

Follow below steps which can resolve the issue:

Check whether the Volume Shadow copy services is started.

  1. Go to start, type services.msc in start search box and press enter.
  2. Now, check Volume shadow copy is running.

  Perform a SFC scan:

The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

  • To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:
  • Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
  • Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
  • If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
  • At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow

Awaiting your response!

Hi Ace H,

Yes, set it to Automatic which should resolve the issue.

Volume Shadow is now set to Automatic.  I'll post to let you know if I see an automatic system restore point.

Still no restore points.  I checked TaskScheduler and noticed that the setting for TaskScheduler under the Windows programs was Disabled for Idle Maintenance so I Enabled it (several times).  Somewhere along the line it reverts back to Disabled. Following your original instructions I then ran System File Checker, Enabled TaskScheduler again for Idle Maintenance and now waiting to see what happens.

Just checked again and in TaskSchedfuler, Idle Maintenance has reverted back to Disabled without creating a restore point.  Need more help with this issue of not creating automatic system restore points.

Hi Ace H ,

This is by design Windows 7 will only create an automatic restore point if no restore points of any type have been created for 7 days.

Perform a sfc scan.

  • At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER:
  • sfc /scannow

click on the below link which would help you with restore point issues:

Rajesh,

You mentioned Windows 7 but I'm running Windows 8 - 64 bit.  I ran system file checker yesterday.

Since it was mentioned that windows 7 and 8 will automatically create a restore point after 7 days, I'm going to wait and see what happens.  I last did a manual restore point on 4/1.
