Dell Inspiron 3650 Upgrade

I currently have a Dell Inspiron 3650 "Gamer Edition"

I am looking into upgrading my graphics card. Will the case fit a higher end card such as a 480 or a 1060? I know a power supply upgrade will be needed.

Do you recommend the upgrade if i did go through with it? Possibly a new case, a new card, and a new power supply with the old computer its self?

Any suggestions? Please provide links with suggested parts

The computer currently has the following

Dimensions: 350mm x 154mm x 282.6mm / 13.78” x 6.06” x 11.13

6th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-6700 Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.00 GHz)

16GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600MHz (8GBx2)

2TB 7200 rpm Hard Drive

AMD Radeon™ HD R9 360 2GB GDDR5

There are a number of pitfalls:

The Dell system includes a proprietary wiring scheme and power supply connector - while you can use an adapter to overcome the latter, the former is not as easy to work with.

If you want to upgrade the case and power supply, figure on needing a replacement mainboard, heatsink assembly, and a retail copy of Windows (the OEM one won't work with a non-Dell board).  Essentially, you're building a new system, carrying over your CPU, memory, drives, mouse, keyboard and monitor.

The case will not fit a 12 inch card EVER.  There are 75W cards that work without any mods.  See video below.

GIGABYTE Radeon RX 460 WINDFORCE OC 2GB GV-RX460WF2OC-2GD

It is upgrade-able with an adapter and hacking.  The extent however is limited by the short size of the actual slot inside the unit.

It is possible to hack it working by removing the power supply entirely and using adapter and placing power supply OUTSIDE the case.

Dual slot SHORT MINI ITX cards(GTX960/970) are fine but I do not think 12 inch long cards fit.

A MODDIY adapter is needed to convert 24 pin to 8 pin.

It is not that i directly want to upgrade the case, I'm asking if you think that is my only option. Would something like a GTX 1060 fit in my case? Would i need a new case? Obviously i would need a new PSU.

What do you recommend?

Is it wise to upgrade a GPU on a prebuilt PC, which may need a bunch of other upgrades?

Is it wise to go with what we discussed above, which is basically building a new system and carrying over old parts?

Thank you for your reply!

is it possible solution to buy this card: Gigabyte Radeon RX460 4GB and work without hacking or PSU upgrade?

Yes the Gigabyte Windforce RX460 GV-RX460WF2OC-4GD is shown working fine in the youtube video.  No mods required but BIOS Secure Boot must be OFF and Legacy CSM ON in order to use.

I have just changed out the Dell 730 card to a Zatoc 1050 TI mini for my Inspiron 3650. Believe me, it was 1 issue after another. But I managed to get it running now.

From your casing dimension, it looks like the one I have (though my CPU etc are not as high spec as yours).

Things to check for your upgrade:

AA

PSU - is yours 240W? You will need a higher powered PSU for 1060. Maybe consider 1050 TI mini if you do not wish to change out te PSU or get an external power supply.

BB

Only after installing the card and having some system freezing problem, I left the back cover opened and realised that with the 1050 card installed, the card is actually splitting the casing compartment into 2. This affects the air circulation in there and that may explain the system freezing I am getting due to the hindered and inadequate air ventilation. My solution is now to remove the back cover and install a fine netting (or used panty hose?) as the cover to keep insects out and minimise dust.

Motherboard BIOS supports Pascal series 10? My early check with Dell says Pascal is not in their list for my Inspiron. Luckily it is as I am running 1050 now. My BIOS is version 3.4.1

After this supposed to be a simple card changeout experience which turned out to be one problem after another, I will now consider other non Dell for my next purchase (I have 3 and 2 Dell laptops and desktops respectively so far). Ha. Their design is very tight leaving very room for changes later, power, space, etc).

I was going to suggest that you go for a new PC to get what you want rather than upgrade your Inspiron but looking at the high end spec you have in your Inspiron, maybe it is worth some  effort to upgrade it.

Maybe get an external power supply for the 1060 card, improve the cooling/ventilation in the lower half of the casing as the 1060 card hinders the normal air flow in there. Use a netting back cover like me? Ha. Heat from 1060 will be much higher than my 1050, looking at the power required for the 2 cards.

A good card comparison web site is here:

All the best! Let us know the outcome once you have changed out the card.
